Tourist Fatally Assaulted in Dublin: Court Hears Details of Attack
A Canadian tourist, Neno Dolmajian, was tragically killed following a violent assault on O’Connell Street in Dublin on June 23, 2024. The 42-year-old had traveled to Ireland to attend a concert by Liam Gallagher. Following a confrontation with a group of men, Dolmajian sustained serious injuries that ultimately led to his death nine days later, on July 2, 2024, at the Mater Hospital.
In a poignant testimony at the Central Criminal Court, Dolmajian’s sister, Maral Dolmajian, described her brother as a sensitive individual with a passion for music and a desire to explore the world. She recounted the brutal nature of the attack, indicating that after an argument, one of the assailants kicked her brother “at full force” in the face. She expressed the profound grief felt by her family, stating, “The consequence of all this goodness… was their only son being killed.”
The fatal encounter began when Dolmajian was out socializing late at night. He had been drinking and was outside the Living Room nightclub on Cathal Brugha Street when he encountered Ionut Danca, 25, and Madalin Ghiuzan, 24. Following a brief argument, Ghiuzan allegedly punched Dolmajian, causing him to fall to the ground. After struggling to get back on his feet, Dolmajian confronted the group again on O’Connell Street, where Danca delivered a “running kick straight to the face.”
During the court proceedings, Sergeant Donal Byrne provided details about the incident, noting that Dolmajian was a single traveler interested in music and playing the guitar. He had checked into the Ivy Exchange in Dublin and was scheduled to leave on the day he sustained his fatal injuries.
In court, Danca’s defense argued that he initially attempted to act as a peacemaker and displayed no aggression until provoked, suggesting Dolmajian may have insulted him or struck first. Danca has since expressed remorse, writing a “sincere apology” to Dolmajian’s family. His attorney emphasized his client’s previously clean record and aspirations for a better future.
Ghiuzan’s defense highlighted the tragic nature of the events, suggesting that the assault could have been handled in lower courts had it not resulted in Dolmajian’s death. Both defendants have pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident, with Danca admitting to unlawful killing and Ghiuzan to assault causing harm.
The court has yet to pronounce a sentence, with Judge Paul McDermott expected to consider the severity of the attack and the impact on Dolmajian’s family before making a final decision. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 17, 2025, as the family seeks justice for the loss of a loved one whose life was cut short in such a tragic and violent manner.
