Six Firefighters Hospitalized After Collision of Fire Engines in London
Six firefighters are receiving treatment in hospital following a serious collision between two fire engines in central London. The incident occurred at approximately 22:17 on January 3, 2026, at the junction of Farringdon Road and Clerkenwell Road, in the Islington area.
The two fire engines, operated by the London Fire Brigade, were responding to an emergency call when they collided. Reports indicate that the firefighters sustained broken bones and injuries to the chest and head as a result of the impact.
Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service, promptly arrived at the scene. A spokesperson for the ambulance service stated they were alerted to the collision at 22:09 and dispatched multiple resources, including advanced paramedics and a hazardous area response team. Six crew members were treated and transported to hospital for further evaluation.
Images from the scene depict significant damage, including shattered windshields and a caved-in roof on one of the fire engines. The collision also resulted in damage to traffic lights and nearby street furniture. Roads around the area were closed to facilitate the response and investigation.
In a statement, Pat Goulbourne, Assistant Commissioner for the London Fire Brigade, confirmed the details of the incident. “Six crew members were involved in the collision and were taken to hospital for checks by the London Ambulance Service,” he said. He added that both fire engines were dispatched to an incident in Islington, which has since been resolved.
The circumstances surrounding the collision are currently under investigation by both the London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service. Authorities are working to determine the precise details leading up to the crash.
As the investigation continues, the London Ambulance Service has assured the public that all injured personnel are receiving appropriate medical care. The incident highlights the risks faced by emergency responders while carrying out their duties.
