Putin Voices Support for Cuba Amid Intensifying US Blockade
The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, met with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla in the Kremlin, affirming Russia’s support for Cuba as it faces a stringent US blockade. The meeting comes at a time when Cuba is enduring severe energy shortages due to an oil embargo and other US restrictions that have drastically limited fuel imports.
Cuba is currently grappling with one of its worst energy crises in years, characterized by extensive blackouts and escalating fuel scarcity. The US pressure campaign has included threats of tariffs on nations that continue to supply oil to the island, exacerbating the situation. During the meeting on October 25, 2023, Putin highlighted the enduring “special relations” between Russia and Cuba, stating, “We have always supported Cuba in its fight for independence and for the right to develop in accordance with its own path. We have always supported the Cuban people.”
Condemnation of US Policies
Putin denounced the US restrictions on Cuba’s economy as “completely unacceptable,” asserting that Russia opposes these measures “clearly and unequivocally.” According to the Kremlin, Parrilla expressed gratitude for Russia’s “extraordinary and unwavering solidarity” during these challenging times.
Last week, the Russian Embassy in Havana announced plans to send a shipment of oil and petroleum products to Cuba to help alleviate the ongoing shortages. This assistance underscores the strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in light of increasing tensions with the US.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, criticized the renewed US pressure on Havana, labeling it an attempt at “economic strangulation.” Support for Cuba’s sovereignty has also been echoed by China, reinforcing the island’s position on the international stage.
US-Cuba Relations Under Strain
Recently, US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency concerning relations with Cuba, accusing its socialist government of aligning with “hostile countries, transnational terrorist groups, and malign actors.” He stated that economic pressure would compel Cuban leadership to “come to us and want to make a deal.”
Trump’s statements have linked Cuba’s relationships with Russia, China, Iran, the Palestinian militant group Hamas, and the Lebanese organization Hezbollah to national security threats facing the United States. In response, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has rejected Trump’s demands and expressed readiness for dialogue “on the basis of equality and respect.”
This ongoing geopolitical struggle highlights the complexities of Cuba’s international relationships and the impact of external pressures on its domestic situation. As Cuba continues to navigate these challenges, the support from Russia may prove crucial in its efforts to maintain sovereignty and stability.
