Authorities in Edinburgh are urging the public to provide information following an incident on New Year’s Day in which an 81-year-old man was struck by a vehicle. The accident occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026, as the man was walking along Queensferry Street, close to Dean Bridge. He was hit by a white Suzuki Ignis and sustained serious injuries, prompting emergency services to transport him to a local hospital.

Police have confirmed that there were no other injuries reported in connection with the incident. In light of the circumstances surrounding the accident, they have launched an appeal for public assistance. They specifically seek witnesses who were in the area at the time and may have observed the collision.

Public Appeal for Information

Given the busy nature of the evening, a time traditionally marked by celebrations for Hogmanay, authorities believe that numerous pedestrians and vehicles were present in the vicinity. As such, they are encouraging anyone who might have seen the crash to come forward. Additionally, police have requested that individuals with dashcam footage from that area around the time of the incident review their recordings and share any relevant information.

Sergeant Christopher Bright of Road Policing East emphasized the importance of community involvement in the investigation. “We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or who has any information to come forward,” he stated. “We know that this was a busy evening with a number of pedestrians and vehicles in the area at the time, so we’d ask those who have yet to speak to us to get in touch.”

Police Scotland has provided a contact number for those with information. Individuals can reach them at 101, referencing incident number 0161 from January 1, 2026.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on gathering as much information as possible to better understand the circumstances surrounding this serious incident. The community’s assistance is vital in ensuring justice and support for the victim and his family.
