Police Clash with ‘Illegal Ravers’ in Bristol on New Year’s Eve

Bristol experienced chaotic scenes on New Year’s Eve as police confronted a significant gathering of approximately 400 illegal ravers at an industrial estate in St Phillips. The incident, which occurred shortly before midnight on December 31, 2025, led to clashes between officers and partygoers, resulting in arrests and heightened tensions across the area.

Avon and Somerset Police received reports at about 23:15 local time regarding loud music and large crowds on Feeder Road. As officers arrived to disperse the gathering, they were met with makeshift missiles thrown by some attendees. In response to the escalating situation, police deployed a drone to monitor the scene, facilitating the swift arrest of two individuals. The police condemned the violence as “totally unacceptable,” emphasizing their commitment to maintaining public safety.

Eyewitness accounts indicate the severity of the clashes, with one partygoer sharing on social media, “Got wigged with a riot shield sprayed with pepper spray and nearly arrested.” Officers in riot gear reportedly used shields to push back against the crowd and deployed pepper spray to control the situation.

Multiple Gatherings and Police Response

The St Phillips gathering was part of a larger issue across Bristol and South Gloucestershire that night, where authorities estimated between 900 to 1,100 individuals participated in unlicensed music events. Earlier in the evening, police responded to noise complaints at a warehouse in Aztec West business park, where between 400 and 500 revelers had gathered. Officers established a cordon around the site, and the majority of attendees dispersed by 03:30 on January 1, 2026.

One individual was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, as well as possession and supply offences. Authorities also seized two vehicles containing sound equipment from this location. At a separate event in Purdown near Stoke Park, approximately 100 people were gathered by 02:25. Officers engaged with the organisers, successfully shutting down the music and clearing the area by 05:00 without any arrests.

Medical assistance was required for several attendees across the various sites due to injuries and suspected drug-related illnesses, underscoring the inherent risks associated with such unregulated gatherings.

Superintendent George Headley addressed the public’s concerns, stating, “We know some people accuse us of trying to stop people from celebrating New Year’s Eve, but that is absolutely not the case. We want people to have a good time; what we don’t want is people’s safety being put at risk.” He further condemned the actions of those throwing items at police officers and driving under the influence, asserting that the public expects a strong response to such behaviour.

As investigations continue, suspects now face potential prosecution as the new year begins. Drone footage released by the police provided a stark visual of the large crowds gathered in St Phillips, reinforcing the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing these events. While the incidents mirror previous crackdowns on raves in the region, authorities remain focused on ensuring public safety in future gatherings.

By January 2, 2026, no additional arrests had been reported in connection with the events of the previous night.
