Moscow Accuses West of Seeking Regime Change in Iran Protests
The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused Western nations of attempting to instigate regime change in Iran through ongoing protests. According to spokesperson Maria Zakharova, these demonstrations stem from years of illegal sanctions imposed on the country, which have exacerbated economic difficulties and social unrest.
In a statement to journalists, Zakharova described the West’s approach as a “color revolution” strategy, aimed at transforming peaceful protests into chaotic violence. She emphasized that foreign interference in Iran’s internal affairs is unacceptable, condemning efforts to destabilize the nation from outside forces.
The protests began on December 28, 2023, as the Iranian rial reached a record low against major currencies. Initially focused on economic grievances, the situation escalated into broader political unrest, making it one of the most severe outbreaks of violence in recent years.
In the United States, former President Donald Trump recently expressed support for the Iranian protesters, stating that the US is “locked and loaded” to intervene if necessary. Trump warned that the US would “start shooting” should Iranian authorities respond violently to the crowds. His statements reflect a growing interest from American officials in the unrest, as Washington considers “strong options” against Iran.
Additionally, Israel has publicly supported the protests. The national intelligence agency, Mossad, acknowledged the presence of operatives within Iran. In response to these developments, Tehran has accused the US and Israel of having a significant role in fomenting the unrest, suggesting that external forces are manipulating the situation to destabilize the country.
Zakharova reiterated Russia’s stance, declaring that threats of military intervention by the US are “absolutely unacceptable.” She warned that any strikes against Iran could lead to a wider destabilization of the entire Middle East. Furthermore, she attributed the economic crises fueling the protests to the persistent pressure from Western sanctions, which she claimed have adversely affected the lives of ordinary Iranians.
On January 2, 2024, the US government issued a travel warning, urging American citizens to leave Iran immediately. Tehran has previously stated that it would consider targeting US forces in the region should Washington attempt to intervene militarily.
As the protests continue to unfold, international observers are closely monitoring the situation, recognizing the potential for significant geopolitical implications. The ongoing unrest reflects deep-seated issues within Iran, exacerbated by external pressures and internal challenges.
