Montenegrin high jumper Maria Vukovic has made a remarkable comeback after a serious injury sidelined her during the 2024 indoor season. Known for her outstanding performances in January, which often set the tone for her entire year, Vukovic faced a significant setback when she fractured her fifth metatarsal during training in Athens. This injury forced her to miss the entire indoor season, impacting her preparation for the competitions ahead.

Reflecting on her situation at the beginning of 2024, Vukovic expressed her disappointment but maintained a positive outlook. “I am very sorry this happened, but I hope we can start fresh soon. I managed to return last year from one injury that caught me unprepared, and I believe I can overcome this as well,” she stated in an interview with Pobjeda. Her resilience has become a hallmark of her career, as she strives to regain her competitive edge.

A Journey of Recovery and Resilience

Fast forward six months, Vukovic returned to the competitive arena at the Balkan Championship in Izmir and later at the European Championship. Despite these appearances signaling a path to recovery, many believed that it would take until 2025 for her to return to her peak form. A year prior, she had cleared 190 centimeters in Belgrade, securing a spot at the European Indoor Championships and participating in the Games of the Small States of Europe. Her summer performances, with jumps of 190 and 191 centimeters, qualified her for the World Championships, where she impressively reached the finals.

As the new year began, Vukovic demonstrated her exceptional abilities once again. Competing in Belgrade, she achieved a jump of 194 centimeters, just two centimeters shy of her personal and national indoor record. “After the surgery, this is my best result. I am honestly in disbelief, but at the same time, it feels normal because I know how hard I worked to get here—both physically and mentally,” Vukovic shared, showcasing her dedication and hard work.

Looking Ahead: Excitement for Upcoming Competitions

In the weeks leading up to her latest achievements, Vukovic participated in a meeting in Lođ, where she finished fifth with a jump of 184 centimeters. She improved her result to 188 centimeters on February 5, and then soared to 194 centimeters, marking a significant milestone for the season. Vukovic is set to compete in the Open Championship of Greece on February 14 and will defend her title at the Balkan Indoor Championships in Belgrade on February 21. She is also on track to secure a place among the top twelve female high jumpers worldwide for the World Indoor Championships in Poland, scheduled for March 20-22.

“A good result in Belgrade will definitely motivate me for the upcoming competitions. I want to enjoy this journey and confirm that all of this is the result of hard work,” Vukovic emphasized, as she prepares to take on new challenges in her athletic career.

Her determination and impressive comeback reflect not only her personal strength but also serve as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes. As she continues to rise, the world will be watching Vukovic, eager to see how high she can soar in the upcoming competitions.
