Manchester United Urged to Elevate Young Star Shea Lacey
Former Manchester United player Clayton Blackmore has called for the club to provide more opportunities to academy talent Shea Lacey, as the new manager, Michael Carrick, faces pressure to maximize the potential of his squad. This demand comes amidst reports that the club’s board has no plans to invest in new signings during the current transfer window.
Lacey, 18, made his senior debut against Aston Villa last month and has shown flashes of promise in his limited appearances. However, he faced a setback during the recent FA Cup match against Brighton, where he was sent off for two yellow cards in quick succession, contributing to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home.
With the club cautious about spending in the transfer market, Blackmore believes that nurturing rising talents like Lacey could be crucial for United’s success in the coming months. Speaking to MEN Sport, Blackmore emphasized Lacey’s unique dedication to the club, stating, “I like the lad Lacey. His family are Liverpool fans. He’s from Liverpool. He’s the only one in the family who supports United. So that’s got to be an edge for him. I’m looking forward to seeing him playing more.”
The former player highlighted the importance of giving Lacey more game time, echoing sentiments from legendary manager Sir Matt Busby: “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough.” Lacey’s commitment was further evident when he publicly apologized on social media after his dismissal, saying, “I want to apologise to all of my teammates, staff, and the fans. I let everybody down tonight. I shouldn’t let my emotions get the better of me. I will do everything I can to make this right.”
This sense of accountability is a quality that Blackmore believes has been lacking in some members of the squad. The challenge now lies in how Carrick integrates Lacey into a competitive lineup. Despite Lacey’s suspension for the upcoming derby against Manchester City, his future looks promising. He made his mark early, debuting for United’s under-18s at just 15 years old.
Lacey’s versatility has also been a topic of discussion. While his preferred position is on the right wing, he has shown potential in central roles as well. In a recent match against Burnley, he impressed fans with a stunning shot that hit the crossbar, showcasing his capability to contribute effectively from various positions on the pitch.
Carrick may be looking to the academy for talent as he navigates a season where spending in the transfer market is limited. If Lacey continues to demonstrate his skill and determination, he could become a vital asset to the team. As Manchester United grapples with its current challenges, the development of young players like Shea Lacey will be crucial in shaping the club’s future.
