Late Equalizer Denies Aberdeen Victory Under New Coach Robinson
In a closely contested match on March 15, 2024, a late equalizer from Barney Stewart denied Stephen Robinson a winning start as the new head coach of Aberdeen FC. The game ended in a 1-1 draw against Falkirk FC in the William Hill Premiership, with Kevin Nisbet initially putting Aberdeen ahead.
Robinson’s Tactical Shift
Robinson, who was appointed just nine-and-a-half weeks after the departure of Jimmy Thelin, aimed to simplify Aberdeen’s approach by switching from a 4-5-1 formation to a 5-3-2 for his debut match. This decision followed a disappointing cup defeat to Dunfermline and the looming threat of relegation, prompting a quicker transition from caretaker Peter Leven.
In this first match, Aberdeen’s attack featured Nisbet alongside Marko Lazetic, while the defensive lineup included Liam Morrison and Gavin Molloy alongside Jack Milne. A notable decision from Robinson was the omission of Lyall Cameron from the starting eleven, favoring a more robust midfield strategy.
Falkirk, guided by manager John McGlynn, maintained the same starting lineup for the third consecutive match following victories over Kilmarnock and Dundee United. The match commenced slowly, with both teams taking time to find their rhythm. It wasn’t until the 15-minute mark that either side posed a significant threat to the goal.
A Game of Missed Opportunities
Aberdeen managed to create some early chances, with Stuart Armstrong delivering a cross that found Morrison at the back post. However, his header was cleared by Dylan Tait. The home side’s defense held strong, but just before the half-hour mark, a strong run from Stewart led to a deflected shot by Calvin Miller, which went over the bar.
Both teams continued to trade chances, with neither able to capitalize before the halftime whistle. The second half started favorably for Falkirk, as Dimitar Mitov, the goalkeeper for Aberdeen, had to react quickly to block a shot from Ben Broggio.
Pressure mounted from Falkirk, with Broggio again involved in creating a chance for Finn Yeats, whose shot was deflected wide. Aberdeen responded through Lazetic, but the striker hesitated when presented with an opportunity, allowing the defense to regroup.
Robinson made a bold move by introducing three substitutes after the hour mark. Cameron, along with Toyosi Olusanya and Ante Palaversa, quickly made their presence felt, with Cameron playing in the speedy Olusanya to win a corner.
In the 73rd minute, Aberdeen took the lead. A mishap from Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain allowed Nisbet to pounce on a poor backpass from Leon McCann. Nisbet blocked Bain’s clearance and nodded home from close range, marking his ninth goal of the season.
It seemed that Aberdeen would secure all three points, but the match took an unexpected turn. In the final minute, Stewart rose above the defense to head home a cross from Ethan Ross, equalizing for Falkirk and ensuring a share of the spoils.
Robinson’s debut ended in disappointment, but his tactical adjustments and the players’ performance provide a foundation for future matches as Aberdeen seeks to regain form in the league.
