Dundee United suffered a disappointing defeat against Hibernian on January 27, 2024, collapsing in the final moments of the match. After initially falling behind to a goal from Martin Boyle, United staged a comeback to take a 2-1 lead, only to concede two goals in quick succession, resulting in a 3-2 loss. This defeat leaves Dundee United facing a significant challenge as they aim to secure a place in the William Hill Premiership top six, now trailing Falkirk by 11 points.

The match at Easter Road showcased a dramatic turn of events. After Boyle’s first-half opener, Dundee United responded strongly, with Ross Graham and substitute Max Watters scoring to give them the lead. However, Hibernian fought back fiercely. Elie Youan equalized in the 89th minute, and shortly thereafter, debutant Ante Suto secured victory for the hosts with a header in stoppage time.

Jim Goodwin, the manager of Dundee United, expressed his deep frustration following the match. He described the late collapse as “embarrassing” and criticized his team’s defensive performance. Goodwin stated, “It’s very hard to analyze the game other than to talk about the embarrassment and the anger that I feel at this moment in time for the way that my team capitulated in the dying moments to give Hibs the three points.”

He acknowledged that despite the team’s improved performance, they failed to secure points from a winning position once again. “That’s what’s cost us in the league and that’s why we find ourselves in the position that we’re in,” he added. Goodwin emphasized the need for his players to take responsibility, especially the defenders and goalkeeper, to prevent such critical moments from occurring in future matches.

The manager noted, “Sometimes you have to grind out results and win ugly and a 1-0 horrible win from time to time is a good result,” highlighting the necessity for his team to adapt their approach to secure crucial points as the season progresses.

On the other side, Hibernian’s head coach, David Gray, celebrated the impact of his new players, particularly Suto. Gray remarked on Suto’s “perfect debut” and expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of the team, stating, “The pleasing thing is we found a way to win the game when we weren’t at our best and I know there’s a lot more to come.”

With a challenging road ahead, Dundee United will need to regroup and address their defensive issues if they hope to recover and make a push for the top six in the league.
