John Heitinga Joins Tottenham as Assistant Coach After Ajax Exit
Former Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga has secured a new position in the Premier League, joining Tottenham Hotspur as an assistant coach to manager Thomas Frank. This appointment comes just two months after Heitinga’s departure from Ajax, where he faced difficulties during his tenure.
Heitinga spent a year at Liverpool, contributing to the team’s success in winning the Premier League title last season. Following this achievement, he transitioned to Ajax but was dismissed in early November 2023 after a disappointing run. During his time at the Dutch club, Heitinga managed to secure only four victories out of eleven matches in the Eredivisie, while the team also suffered losses in all four of their Champions League games.
In a statement on Ajax’s official website at the time of his sacking, technical director Alex Kroes remarked, “It’s a painful decision. We know it can take time for a new coach to work with a squad that has undergone changes. We have given John that time, but we believe it’s best for the club to appoint someone else to lead the team.”
Despite this setback, Heitinga’s return to the Premier League is seen as a positive step. Frank expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Heitinga to the coaching staff, stating, “John is a great addition to our coaching staff. His ability, personality and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch.” He further highlighted Heitinga’s experience, noting his impressive playing career in Europe, including five years in the Premier League and his time with the Dutch national team.
Under Heitinga’s guidance, Tottenham aims to strengthen their defensive strategies, leveraging his background as a former defender. Frank emphasized that Heitinga brings valuable coaching and management experience that will contribute to the team’s development.
This season, Liverpool has already faced Tottenham, securing a 2-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with goals from Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike. The two clubs are set to meet again on March 14, 2024, at Anfield, although the fixture date may be subject to change due to broadcast selections.
In addition to his role at Liverpool, Heitinga has experience in the Premier League, having worked under David Moyes at West Ham United. Reflecting on his time in England, Heitinga previously stated, “I got to work with two coaches of which one has been around for a long time, and the other one got to continue Jürgen Klopp’s legacy. I think, together, we built something wonderful there last season.”
As Heitinga embarks on this new chapter with Tottenham, fans will be keen to see how his extensive coaching experience will influence the squad’s performance in the remainder of the season.
