Gen Z Men Shift Away from Trump, Signaling GOP Challenges Ahead
Recent polling indicates a significant shift among male Gen Z voters away from former President Donald Trump and the broader Republican Party. This trend emerges less than a year after this demographic contributed to Trump’s unexpected victory in the 2024 election. The findings raise concerns for the GOP as they prepare for the 2026 midterms, especially given the current political landscape.
According to the latest Harvard Youth Poll, conducted in October 2023, Trump’s approval rating among voters aged 18 to 29 is a mere 32 percent. Additionally, young men in this age group now prefer Democratic control of Congress by a 12 percent margin. These results reflect a growing dissatisfaction with both major parties, with none achieving higher than a one-third approval rating. Notably, Democratic support is trending upward, while Republican approval has declined since spring.
John Della Volpe, Director of Polling at the Harvard Institute of Politics, highlighted the discontent felt by young Americans. “The systems and institutions meant to support them no longer feel stable, fair, or responsive to this generation,” he stated in a recent release. This sentiment stems from a broader feeling of insecurity regarding democracy, the economy, and social relationships, as many young people feel unheard and unprotected during a time of uncertainty.
The polling also reveals that younger Gen Z men, specifically those born between 2002 and 2007, may be even more critical of Trump’s policies. Research conducted by YouGov and the Young Men’s Research Project indicates that these individuals oppose key elements of Trump’s agenda, such as ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) crackdowns and the elimination of vaccine requirements. Charlie Sabgir, the report’s author, noted that younger Gen Z members may not have fully grasped the instability of the Trump administration, leading to a sense of “buyer’s remorse.”
This disengagement among young men could reflect a broader trend of youth discontent with Trump. A separate Yale Youth Poll revealed that young voters increasingly disapprove of the former president’s job performance, marking a reversal from their spring 2025 views. When considering millennials alongside Gen Z, the disapproval rating rises to nearly 60 percent, according to a recent survey from the University of Chicago.
Cathy Cohen, a professor at the University of Chicago, emphasized the disconnect young people feel with their government. “There is a real sense that these individuals and these parts of the administration are not delivering,” she told NPR. Many young voters perceive that the government is failing to provide the opportunities they seek to improve their lives.
Despite some positive economic indicators, such as a reported 4.3 percent growth in third-quarter GDP, Trump’s popularity among young voters remains low. A recent Economist/YouGov poll shows a -34 percent net approval rating among adults aged 18 to 29 in November, reflecting an improvement from a -55 rating in October. This suggests that while economic conditions may be improving, they have not yet translated into a favorable perception of Trump among younger voters.
The evolving political landscape among Gen Z men signals potential challenges for the Republican Party. As this demographic continues to distance itself from Trump and the GOP, party leaders may need to reconsider their strategies to engage with younger voters effectively.
