Emmanuel Eboue Reflects on Early Arsenal Days with Lauren

Former Arsenal right-back Emmanuel Eboue has shared a candid reflection on his early days at the club, recounting a moment when Lauren, a key member of the legendary Invincibles squad, laughed at his aspirations to become a starting player. Eboue joined Arsenal in January 2005 from Belgian club Beveren, catching the attention of manager Arsène Wenger who saw potential in the young Ivorian.

“When I arrived, Arsène Wenger spoke a lot with me and was keen to let me know what was expected of me,” Eboue stated. “He knew it was going to be difficult for me at first, but he said he believed in me, and that was all that mattered.”

He approached Lauren early in his time at the club, communicating his ambition to play regularly. “I said to him, very early on, ‘Lauren, listen to me… I’m here to play. I’m not here to sit on the bench.’ He was laughing at me, and I wanted to let him know that I was serious,” Eboue explained.

With time, Eboue seized his opportunity when Lauren sustained an injury during the following season. His perseverance paid off as he became Arsenal’s first-choice right-back, contributing significantly to the team’s defensive lineup.

Arsenal fans fondly remember Eboue’s role in the remarkable run to the 2006 Champions League final, where he played alongside fellow young talents such as Philippe Senderos and Mathieu Flamini, who was positioned out of his usual role. This makeshift back four proved to be resilient, showcasing the depth and potential within the squad.

Eboue continued to establish himself as a vital player, maintaining his position at right-back until the arrival of Bacary Sagna, which prompted a change in his role.
