Eluned Morgan Celebrates One-Year Milestone as First Minister
Eluned Morgan marks a significant milestone today, August 6, 2023, as she celebrates one year in office as Wales’ first female First Minister. In a statement reflecting on her tenure, she reiterated her commitment to “listen, to learn and to deliver” on the pressing issues facing the people of Wales.
In a post shared across her social media platforms, Morgan highlighted her administration’s focus on key areas identified by citizens: health, jobs, housing, and transport. “You were clear: Wales needs action – not more words,” she stated, emphasizing the urgency of addressing these critical concerns.
Health and Economic Initiatives
During her first year, Morgan points to substantial investments in the National Health Service (NHS), including a notable reduction in the number of patients waiting over two years for treatment, which has decreased by more than half. She announced plans to establish Women’s Health Hubs across every health board area by spring 2024, alongside efforts to enhance pay and working conditions for social care staff in collaboration with unions and employers.
In terms of economic development, the First Minister reported the creation of over 40,000 jobs during this Senedd term. The Welsh Government has also actively supported local businesses, achieving one of the highest rates of inward investment in the UK. Regeneration projects are underway to revitalize town centres, with funding for arts venues tripled compared to a decade ago.
Infrastructure and Education Improvements
Morgan outlined significant strides in infrastructure, including the completion of the Heads of the Valleys road, which is designed to improve travel times and attract further investment. The Welsh Government has also invested hundreds of millions to enhance road safety and repair thousands of potholes. Most journeys are now serviced by new trains, and there is a commitment to public transport with £110 million allocated for better bus services, safer school routes, and accessible transport options for young people.
Education has also seen substantial support, with an additional £262 million injected into schools. This funding ensures that every primary school pupil in Wales receives a free school meal, aiming to provide every child with a strong start in life.
As she reflects on her achievements over the past year, Morgan remains firm in her belief that more work lies ahead. “But we’re not done yet. There’s still more to do, more voices to hear and more communities to back,” she concluded, expressing her vision for a stronger, fairer, and more connected Wales.
Eluned Morgan’s first year as First Minister has been marked by a commitment to actionable change, focusing on the needs of Welsh citizens and laying the groundwork for future progress.
