Decic Claims Victory Over Sutjeska to Secure Cup Semifinal Spot
In a thrilling series of quarterfinal matches in the Montenegrin Cup, Decic triumphed over Sutjeska with a score of 2-1, securing their place in the semifinals. The match, held in Tuzla, highlighted the tight competition in Montenegrin football, where small details often determine the outcomes.
Just four days after suffering a 3-1 defeat to the same opponent in league play, Sutjeska faced a surprising turn of events in the cup match. Despite dominating the previous encounter, they found themselves unable to secure a win. Meanwhile, Mornar convincingly defeated Iskra 4-0, and Jezero overcame Mladost 2-0 in other quarterfinal games.
The most dramatic moment occurred at Mali Brdo, where Petrovac squandered a two-goal lead, only to lose in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. This match marked a significant achievement for Otrant Olimpik, the only second-division team to reach this stage of the competition, as they advanced with a 5-4 victory in penalties.
Decic’s Path to Victory
Decic’s journey in the cup began with a notable victory over Buducnost in the first round, followed by their win against Sutjeska. These victories have positioned them as the leading contenders for the trophy, especially in light of their recent performances.
On the pitch, Decic took control early in the second half. Nikola Braunovic opened the scoring with a goal from a corner in the 56th minute, while Petar Pavlicevic sealed the match with an elegant finish in the 85th minute. Sutjeska managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time through Ivan Vukcevic, but it was too late to alter the outcome.
Pavlicevic remarked on the significance of the victory, stating, “We played with the right approach, created many chances, and we utilized two of them. I am happy to contribute to a win that means a lot to everyone.” The 25-year-old midfielder, who spent part of his career in the youth ranks of Benfica, expressed his determination to continue performing at a high level.
Sutjeska’s Title Aspirations
For Sutjeska, the defeat marked the end of their cup run, but they remain focused on the league title. Under the management of Dejan Jelenic, Sutjeska had been undefeated until this match. Jelenic acknowledged Decic’s superior performance, stating, “Decic deserved to advance, and we must learn from this experience. We need to improve our decision-making on the field.”
As Sutjeska prepares for their upcoming league match against Donja Gorica, they aim to reclaim their position at the top of the table. Jelenic emphasized the need for consistency and professionalism moving forward, underscoring the importance of learning from errors made during the cup match.
Meanwhile, Otrant Olimpik’s historic achievement in reaching the semifinals speaks volumes about the progress made by the club, especially under the guidance of young coach Nedjeljko Vlahovic. He expressed pride in his team’s performance, recognizing their ability to compete against established first-division teams.
With the ongoing league season and the upcoming semifinals, the excitement in Montenegrin football is palpable. The stage is set for more thrilling encounters as clubs vie for the coveted cup and league titles.
