David Mirković Shines on NCAA Debut with Impressive Stats

David Mirković made a striking debut for the University of Illinois, contributing significantly in an exhibition match against Illinois State, where the team secured a convincing win with a score of 92-65. The young athlete, who hails from Montenegro, recorded 19 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists, showcasing his potential as he embarks on his NCAA journey this season.
His performance immediately caught the attention of local media, with Sports Illustrated questioning if Illinois has discovered a new star. The publication emphasized the comparison drawn by Ryan Pedon, the head coach of Illinois State and former assistant coach at Illinois, who noted that Mirković possesses qualities reminiscent of NBA superstar Nikola Jokić, a three-time MVP.
“Before he arrived, we could only watch video clips, so you never really know the level of competition,” Pedon remarked after the game. Mirković, standing at 193 cm and weighing 113 kg, impressed Pedon not only with his statistical output but also with his overall gameplay. “He has something of Jokić in him. He moves well, has strong dribbling skills, and can shoot effectively. Plus, he has immense physical potential,” Pedon added.
While Coach Brad Underwood expressed his excitement about Mirković’s first appearance, he also acknowledged the uncertainties that come with transitioning to a more competitive level. The coach highlighted the unique skill set of the 19-year-old forward, reflecting on how Mirković’s past experience as a point guard contributes to his versatility on the court. “He has been a point guard for years, and I’m truly impressed by his play,” Underwood stated.
Mirković himself shared insights into his gameplay philosophy, saying, “All my coaches have always encouraged me to push the ball forward after a rebound. That’s what they want me to do here as well. Since I played point guard before, I feel comfortable doing that.” His ability to blend skills typically associated with different positions has sparked excitement among the coaching staff and fans alike.
Underwood envisions a bright future for Mirković, even speculating about the possibility of him achieving a triple-double while wearing the Illinois jersey. Nonetheless, the coach emphasized the learning curve ahead, stating, “There will be days when things don’t go as well as in the first game, and he will need to learn, grow, and adapt on the court.”
As Mirković prepares for the regular NCAA season, which begins in November 2023, he will join five other Montenegrin players participating in the league. Notable names include Luka Bogavac from North Carolina, Andrija Grbović from Arizona, Vladimir Sudar from Pepperdine, Marko Radunović from Boston, and Fedja Zugić from Creighton.
The excitement surrounding Mirković’s potential continues to grow as he aims to make his mark in college basketball, drawing comparisons that suggest he could follow in the footsteps of some of the game’s greats. His journey is just beginning, but the early signs indicate he is a player to watch closely in the coming months.
