Church Renovation Plans Paused by Owner Dr. Charlie Easmon
A significant renovation project for Castlehill Church in Forres has been put on hold as owner Dr. Charlie Easmon reassesses the scope and financial aspects of the undertaking. Having purchased the B-listed United Presbyterian Church in May 2021, Dr. Easmon has partially renovated the property but now requires a re-evaluation of its current value before proceeding further.
Dr. Easmon explained, “There have been some complications in my working life, so I’ve put the project on hold for the moment.” He noted that a new valuation is necessary, as the financial landscape may have shifted since the last assessment four years ago. He plans to either fund the valuation himself or request an estimate from an auctioneer.
Built in 1870, the church has a rich history but has faced numerous challenges. After closing as a place of worship in the 1990s, it served as a community hall until its permanent closure in 2005. Various owners have attempted to revive the property, including Irishman Aaron Hill, who abandoned his efforts due to health issues. In 2010, Claire Love purchased the site with plans for a community centre, but her inability to secure match-funding led to its sale again in 2013 for £180,000.
The church was in poor condition when Dr. Easmon acquired it, with issues including a collapsing west wall and a severe pigeon infestation. Since then, he has invested in repairs to the roof and the central structure. “The church spire was rocking at one point and threatening to cause an ‘Omen’-style situation, so I spent a few thousand on making that safe,” he remarked.
As renovations continue, Dr. Easmon aims to transform the lower level into a living space featuring two bedrooms, a lounge, and a kitchen. The upper level will maintain a separate space for community use, including a bathroom and a large hall available for hire. He is working with local tradesman Ian Mackenzie to manage the renovations, which will address safety concerns and modernize the building.
Dr. Easmon is optimistic about the potential for community funding, particularly from the Forres Conservation and Heritage Scheme, which may assist in advancing the project. He emphasized, “The plan is still to go ahead as before.”
The project is expected to resume by the end of the year, with Dr. Easmon eager to become an active member of the Forres community and provide a valuable resource through the renovated church space. He looks forward to contributing to local initiatives, including the reopening of nearby attractions such as the Dallas Dhu distillery and the development of a new whisky shop in town.
As he prepares to restart the renovation, Dr. Easmon is committed to ensuring that the church not only retains its historical significance but also serves as a vibrant community hub for generations to come.
