Chaos Unfolds at Birmingham Takeaway’s £1 Chicken Deal
A recent £1 chicken and chips promotion at a Birmingham takeaway led to unexpected chaos as long queues formed outside the establishment. Customers flocked to Hajees Original Fish & Chips, which boasts a one-star food hygiene rating, after a viral TikTok post attracted significant attention, amassing over 76,000 views. The offer, designed to evoke nostalgia for affordable meals, drew crowds eager to relive simpler dining experiences.
Upon arrival at 3 pm, just an hour before the promotion was set to end, the scene was hectic. The line extended out the door, reflecting a palpable excitement among patrons. The cramped interior buzzed with energy as staff scrambled to meet the high demand.
A customer waiting in line noted the urgency of the situation. “I’m just here for the kids,” he remarked, highlighting the various motivations behind the visit. As the minutes ticked away, anticipation turned to frustration when, after nearly 50 minutes of waiting, a staff member announced, “We’re out of chicken.”
This revelation came just minutes before the deal was scheduled to expire. Tensions escalated as one particularly vocal mother, who had been in line longer than most, engaged in a heated exchange with staff over the promotion’s terms. Her insistence that they should still honour the deal for those still waiting underscored the emotional investment many had in the experience.
Despite the turmoil, one determined customer decided to press on. After finally reaching the counter, they ordered a meal consisting of chips, a grilled chicken wrap, and a drink, totaling £8. The food, however, did not meet all expectations.
Unwrapping the meal in their car revealed a generous, albeit excessive, portion of mayonnaise smothering the chips. While many were inedible under the creamy layer, the surviving chips offered a satisfying crunch and fluffy interior. The grilled chicken wrap was deemed acceptable, reminiscent of familiar fast-food offerings, a comparison made to KFC.
Reflecting on the experience, the customer concluded that while the chaotic wait and the one-star hygiene rating might deter them from returning, the food itself had surprised them. They left with a newfound understanding that a low hygiene score does not necessarily indicate poor food quality, although they would advise against asking for extra mayonnaise.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of dining experiences, especially when enticing deals are involved. While many left the scene with mixed feelings, the allure of the £1 chicken and chips offer will likely continue to draw customers to Hajees, even as they navigate the complexities of food hygiene and customer service.
