Asamoah Gyan Reveals Struggles with Fame and Fortune in Football
Asamoah Gyan, a prominent figure in football and one of the sport’s highest-paid players, has opened up about the challenges he faced after his career earnings surged. The former striker, who played for clubs such as Sunderland and Shanghai SIPG, revealed that many individuals from his native Ghana sought to exploit his newfound wealth.
In 2015, Gyan signed with Shanghai SIPG, which significantly increased his net worth. The striker’s career began at Liberty Professionals in 2003, after which he joined Udinese the same year. He spent five years in Italy, including a loan at Modena, before transferring to Rennes in France. Gyan made headlines when Sunderland acquired him for a then-club-record fee of £10 million in 2010. Yet, his time in England was short-lived as he moved on loan to Al Ain within a year, later securing a permanent transfer.
At Al Ain, Gyan reportedly earned £160,000 per week. However, this figure paled in comparison to his salary at Shanghai SIPG, where it skyrocketed to an impressive £227,000 weekly. During this period, Gyan was among the top earners in football, positioned closely behind superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who garnered between £350,000 and £400,000 weekly. He was recognized as the eighth-highest-paid player globally at that time.
Gyan’s contributions on the international stage were equally significant, as he scored 51 goals in 109 caps for the Ghana national team from 2003 to 2019. Despite his success, Gyan shared with former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand that his financial success brought unexpected emotional challenges.
In the interview featured on “Rio Ferdinand Presents,” Gyan expressed, “It was crazy. Like everybody will be expecting something from you. Family, friends, wherever you go, even people, when they don’t even know you. As soon as you pop up, everybody wants you to give [them] money.”
He highlighted the pressure from acquaintances and strangers alike, stating, “We give, we give. I give most of the time, but sometimes people try to take advantage of it.” Gyan’s frustration stemmed from the continuous demands placed upon him, which often left him feeling upset.
His time in the Chinese league, however, proved to be brief in terms of performance, with Gyan netting only 8 goals in 26 appearances. Following his stint in China, he played for Kayserispor in Turkey, NorthEast United in India, and Legon Cities in Ghana before announcing his retirement in 2021.
Asamoah Gyan’s journey reflects not just the glamour associated with football but also the personal challenges that can arise from sudden fame and wealth. His candid remarks shed light on the complexities faced by athletes, particularly in managing relationships with those who may seek to benefit from their success.
