Esad Merulić, a prominent Montenegrin singer renowned for his unique interpretations of sevdah, shared his insights on the enduring nature of this traditional music style. He emphasized that sevdah can only be performed authentically and with soul, despite the ever-evolving landscape of musical trends and technology.

Sevdah: A Family Tradition

Merulić, who hails from an old Podgorica family with roots in Drča, views sevdah as an inseparable part of his identity and family tradition. He describes Podgorica’s sevdah as distinctive, characterized by soft singing and beautiful themes, setting it apart from perceptions of the genre in the broader region.

“Podgorica’s sevdah is specific, and while it shares commonalities with the Bosnian, Sandžak, and particularly Pljevlja styles, it holds its own unique value,” Merulić stated in an interview. He highlighted that, despite its cultural significance in Podgorica and much of Montenegro, sevdah does not receive the attention it deserves.

“Aside from a few concerts held annually and the efforts of a small number of respected colleagues, there is very little support,” he noted. “The environment is changing, and while younger generations are engaging with sevdalinka, we often prefer to bring in musicians from elsewhere rather than showcase our own talent.”

The Challenges of Performing at Home

Merulić recalled a time when the Center for the Preservation and Development of Minority Cultures in Montenegro (CEKUM) effectively promoted local artists, providing a platform for around 14-15 singers regularly performing with the orchestra of Šukrija Žuti Serhatlić. He advocates for a proactive approach in organizing cultural events, suggesting that institutions should take the initiative to incorporate these activities into their annual plans.

Despite being recognized as an authentic representative of Podgorica’s sevdah wherever he goes, Merulić expressed disappointment over the lack of local performances in his hometown. “The music scene here is rich with talent, yet often, young artists must venture beyond our borders to make a name for themselves,” he explained. “Many find themselves performing in clubs, restaurants, and weddings instead of local venues.”

Merulić believes that a serious music career requires talent, original songs, and financial investment. “There is no well-organized scene,” he lamented. “Recently, local musicians were overlooked for performances at Podgorica’s market, leading to protests from the Montenegrin Association of Performing Artists.”

“Despite my songs garnering nearly 60 million views, I was not invited to participate. It raises questions about what might be influencing these decisions,” he added.

Recognizing Quality and Emotion

Merulić is proud of his accomplishments, noting that audiences recognize quality and emotion in music. “You would be surprised by how finely tuned people’s ears are to discern these qualities,” he remarked. He cited the example of Ksenija Cicvarić, a celebrated singer who, despite lacking formal musical training, achieved great success.

Reflecting on his career, Merulić expressed pride in his recognition and the loyalty of his audience, which spans both younger and older generations. “This year, I hope to hold a concert in Podgorica to show my gratitude for the love and support I have received over the years,” he stated.

In a personal note, Merulić shared that he experienced a family tragedy earlier this year, which temporarily halted his plans. “I will sing as long as I live,” he affirmed. “I want to create and perform for my Podgorica. Sometimes I regret not having given more to it.”

Embracing Technology in Music

On the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) in music, Merulić acknowledged that while some artists shy away from its use, he believes it can be beneficial for developing ideas and arrangements. However, he firmly stated that nothing can replace the human voice, particularly the soul and emotion that define music.

“AI can be incredibly useful if used wisely, but it cannot create authentic sevdah,” he asserted. “At least, I have yet to hear it. Sevdah, especially our Podgorica version, embodies the soul.”

Merulić remains committed to his musical journey, expressing hope that future generations will continue to cherish and evolve the tradition of sevdah, ensuring its place in the cultural fabric of Montenegro.
