President Milatović Calls for Calm After Podgorica Attack
President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, condemned an attack that occurred in Podgorica yesterday, expressing support for the injured citizen and their family. Milatović emphasized the need for a swift and thorough investigation by the relevant authorities, as well as timely and accurate communication with the public.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, he urged citizens to remain calm and exercise restraint. “There must be no room for collective guilt or the stigmatization of entire communities. It is our obligation to protect public safety, social cohesion, and the rule of law,” Milatović asserted.
The President called on public figures to be mindful of their messaging to avoid escalating tensions. He highlighted the responsibility of the police and the prosecutor’s office to actively combat hate speech and any form of threats.
Milatović also underscored the necessity of a responsible immigration policy, stating, “Montenegro needs a policy that is firm against abuses and crime while being just towards those who respect our laws.” He outlined that such a policy should include targeted security checks, effective sanctions against illegal activities, and enhanced oversight to prevent abuses. Furthermore, he conveyed a clear message that individuals who live and work in Montenegro in accordance with regulations are welcomed and safe.
The President recalled that he had previously expressed concerns about migration issues and the urgent need for a well-defined, balanced, and responsible state policy in this area. “Unfortunately, no concrete institutional steps have been taken to date. Today’s incident must serve as a catalyst for implementing serious and sustainable measures in the interest of all citizens,” he stated.
In conclusion, Milatović emphasized that Montenegro must demonstrate maturity by adhering to laws on foreigners without exception, maintaining zero tolerance for offenders, ensuring fairness for all, and promoting calm during times when tensions are most likely to escalate.
