Montenegro Triumphs Over Faroe Islands in World Championship Opener

Montenegro’s women’s handball team opened their World Championship campaign with a 32-27 victory against the Faroe Islands. The match, held on January 14, 2024, showcased the team’s resilience and skill, particularly highlighted by goalkeeper Armel Atingre, who achieved an impressive save rate of 44.7 percent in the first half.

The Montenegrin side, known as the “Lions,” capitalized on their status as favorites, but the match was not without its challenges. Despite leading 13-9 at the 22-minute mark, they faced a spirited counter from the Faroe Islands. Atingre’s eight saves in the first half helped maintain the lead, although her teammates missed several scoring opportunities, failing to capitalize on clear chances which could have extended their advantage.

Strong Second Half Performance

In the second half, head coach Suzana Lazović made tactical adjustments that paid off. After Katarina Džaferović finished the first half with four goals, the introduction of Jelena Vukčević in the second half added fresh energy. Vukčević struck twice early, extending Montenegro’s lead to 17-14.

The team’s defensive strategy also improved, limiting the Faroe Islands to only two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. Ivona Pavićević scored two consecutive goals, pushing the lead to five at 21-15. However, the Faroe Islands fought back, narrowing the gap to just four goals at 27-23 with eight minutes remaining.

Despite the pressure, Montenegro maintained composure. With strategic plays and key goals, including an important steal by Anastasija Marsenić, the team secured their victory.

Key Players Shine

The match featured standout performances from several players. Jelena Vukčević led the scoring for Montenegro with five goals, while Jauković, Godeč, and Džaferović each contributed four goals. Atingre’s overall performance, with a total of 14 saves including six in the closing minutes, proved critical in sealing the win.

Montenegro’s next challenge comes against Paraguay in two days, where they will aim to build on their strong start in the tournament. With their sights set on further victories, the team looks forward to demonstrating their full potential on the world stage.
