Karl Boudrias Eyes Continued Success as Giants Face Key Weekend Matches
Defenceman Karl Boudrias is excited for the Belfast Giants as they prepare for a crucial weekend of matches against the Manchester Storm and the Cardiff Devils. Following his return to the Giants after initial uncertainty about his future, Boudrias is eager to build on recent improvements in the team’s defensive play.
After signing with the Belfast Giants, Boudrias quickly made plans to travel to Northern Ireland. Within hours of finalizing his contract, he was on a flight, having informed Ron Choules, head coach of the Trois-Rivières Lions in the ECHL, about the change in his plans. “I had maybe two hours to do my luggage and just say goodbye to my family and friends,” Boudrias recalled, reflecting on his rapid departure.
Boudrias made a significant impact upon his return, participating in matches including a challenging game against Swiss elite side Lausanne in the Champions Hockey League. “It was really nice to play in Switzerland,” he said. “The pace of play is quicker. You don’t have that much time with the puck. It makes it way harder, for sure.”
Despite a difficult off-season where he was initially told he would not return to the Giants, Boudrias found clarity and direction following his re-signing. He played a key role in the Giants’ success last season, contributing to their double championship win. His return comes as the team has bounced back from a shaky start, winning five of their last six League games and climbing to fourth place in the Elite Ice Hockey League standings with a record of 9-3-1.
The Giants have improved their defensive game significantly, conceding only 14 goals in their last six outings. This uptick in performance is something Boudrias attributes to the team’s ability to return to a stable lineup after dealing with injuries. “At the start of the season, we had a lot of injured players. There was a lot of mixing up in those pairings. It was pretty hard for us to be consistent,” he explained.
Looking ahead to the weekend’s matches, Boudrias emphasized the importance of maintaining this momentum. “Every weekend in this League there are no games off. Every weekend is pretty big,” he stated. The Giants will face the Manchester Storm at their home rink, known for its smaller size, presenting a unique challenge. Following that match, they will take on the Cardiff Devils, a strong contender in the league.
Boudrias expressed confidence in his team’s preparation, saying, “We want to start on the good foot for sure against Manchester.” He is keenly aware of the task ahead, recognizing Cardiff as a formidable opponent. “It’s going to be a challenge for us,” he admitted, underscoring the competitive nature of the league.
As the Giants look to extend their winning streak, Boudrias is ready to contribute to the team’s success. With eight assists in 19 games this season, he is poised to make an impact as they navigate this demanding weekend.
