Journalists in Montenegro Demand Better Pay and Safety Measures

Journalists in Montenegro are advocating for better wages and improved safety measures on the occasion of the country’s Journalist Day, celebrated annually on January 23. A recent survey conducted by the **Društvo profesionalnih novinara Crne Gore (DPNCG)** reveals that most journalists view this day as symbolic, particularly given their low average salaries, which hover just above the minimum wage. Only a handful of those employed by public media services benefit from sectoral collective agreements that ensure salaries above the average.

The survey highlights that journalists often feel overlooked by authorities, who they believe should recognize their contributions year-round, not just on designated holidays. The report underscores the challenging nature of their work, which they describe as “poorly paid and stressful, yet of public significance.”

Many journalists report that their low earnings directly impact their daily work. Despite facing uninvestigated attacks, they are not discouraged from reporting. Colleagues stated that journalism is inherently challenging and that risks, including threats and violence, were present before they entered the profession. Some acknowledge the dangers but express a desire for the government to provide a safer working environment.

The economic status of journalists remains a pressing issue. Participants in the survey emphasized the need for solidarity and collaboration among media professionals, advocating for a collective approach to fight for their rights. They noted that employers often prioritize personal interests, particularly within private media outlets. In contrast, while employees of public services receive competitive salaries, journalists remain at the lower end of the pay scale, highlighting a paradox in the industry.

Many journalists are dissatisfied with how media organizations represent their interests, believing that external donor projects often take precedence over their needs. The DPNCG plans to release detailed findings from the online survey on their website. The responses will inform future initiatives aimed at supporting journalists, particularly legal and psychological assistance, which many feel is lacking.

According to the DPNCG, women journalists, who statistically face more attacks and threats, have disproportionately utilized these support services. The DPNCG, under the leadership of **Mila Radulović**, is also pushing for stricter penalties for verbal assaults and hate speech aimed at female journalists, civil activists, and politicians.

Promoting an updated Ethical Code is among the DPNCG’s priorities, as they work to ensure adherence to ethical standards and solidarity among colleagues. They encourage journalists to unite, regardless of editorial policies, and emphasize the importance of self-advocacy.

In a statement, the DPNCG declared, “No one will fight for us if we do not take action ourselves and finally prioritize our rights.” They called on their peers to solidify their positions within the media landscape as advocates for their rights and safety.
