Hundreds of student athletes showcased their skills during the AoC Sport South West Regional Championships, held on October 22, 2023, at Richard Huish College in Taunton. The event welcomed over 300 competitors from across the South West, marking the college’s third consecutive year hosting this prominent sporting event.
A variety of sports were featured, including rugby, football, cross-country, netball, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and tennis. Participants aimed to secure their spots at the AoC National Championships scheduled for April 2026 in Nottingham.
The Huish athletes excelled particularly in the cross-country events. The men’s team achieved a remarkable clean sweep of the podium, securing first, second, and third places. The women’s team also demonstrated their prowess, finishing in a commendable second place overall. In racket sports, Huish saw three students qualify in badminton and two in table tennis, further enhancing the college’s reputation for athletic excellence.
Mike Ryan, the sports development officer at Huish, expressed pride in hosting the event once again. He stated, “We’re incredibly proud to host this prestigious event once again. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to compete at a high level and represent their colleges with pride. The level of talent on display was outstanding.”
The AoC Regionals will continue into early November, featuring basketball, volleyball, and cricket competitions. Richard Huish College is committed to supporting its athletes as they aim for success and qualification for the national finals.
Tickets and additional information about the championships are available through the college’s official channels. The enthusiasm and competitive spirit displayed by the students reflect the ongoing dedication to sports within the educational framework of the region.
