Gareth Thomas Shares Experience of Abuse and Stigma After HIV Disclosure

Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas has opened up about the abuse he faced following his disclosure of being HIV positive. In a recent appearance on the podcast The Life of Bryony, hosted by Bryony Gordon, Thomas recounted a particularly distressing encounter where he was spat on and called an “Aids spreader” by two young boys.
During the podcast, Thomas, who gained public attention for revealing his health status in 2019, shared how he attempted to defuse the situation. He said he offered the boys a hug, stating, “I won’t sit here and be the big guy and say it doesn’t hurt.” He described the moment when one boy spat at his chest while the other spat at his feet. Instead of reacting with anger, Thomas opened his arms to them, which he believes confused their expectations. “They wanted a reaction that was completely different,” he noted.
As the first rugby union player to achieve 100 caps for Wales, Thomas explained that he has often had to navigate environments where HIV-related stigma is prevalent. He emphasized that many individuals are discriminated against simply due to their association with him.
In discussing the personal impact of stigma, Thomas mentioned his husband, Stephen Williams-Thomas, who is HIV negative. He highlighted the challenges Stephen faces as a teacher, fearing the potential stigma from students. Thomas also expressed concern for his parents, who have endured hurtful comments stemming from his openness about his HIV status.
The former athlete revealed that his public disclosure has been manipulated by a vocal minority that exploits vulnerability to perpetuate stigma. Following his announcement, Thomas participated in the documentary Gareth Thomas: HIV and Me, which aimed to raise awareness and combat misinformation surrounding HIV. In 2020, he launched the initiative Tackle HIV in collaboration with ViiV Healthcare and the Terrence Higgins Trust, aiming to promote education and understanding about the virus.

Through sharing his experiences, Gareth Thomas continues to challenge stereotypes and stigma associated with HIV, fostering a conversation that aims to create a more accepting environment for all.
