De la Fuente Dismisses Flick’s Complaints About Yamal Injury
Coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed indifference to Hansi Flick‘s recent complaints regarding the treatment of young star Lamine Yamal by the Spanish national team. Yamal returned from international duty earlier this month with a groin injury after participating in both World Cup qualifying matches against Bulgaria and another unnamed opponent. The 18-year-old winger has since missed several matches for FC Barcelona, prompting Flick to criticize Spain for not adequately managing the player’s health.
During an event on Thursday, De la Fuente stated, “Right now I don’t remember what Flick said. Neither is it of any interest to me.” His comments come in light of Flick’s assertions that Yamal had been unable to train effectively with the national squad and had played through pain after taking medication.
Flick, the head coach of the German national team, voiced his discontent, noting, “This is not taking care of players. Spain have the best team in the world; in every position, they are unbelievably good. I am really sad about this situation.” He added that communication between national and club teams could be improved, remarking, “I never really spoke with De la Fuente about it. Maybe my Spanish is not good, his English is not good, so this is a problem.”
Yamal joined the Spanish squad with a pre-existing groin issue, which was aggravated during his appearances. Prior to his injury, he had shown impressive form, scoring two goals and providing two assists in three appearances for Barcelona this season. His absence has been felt acutely, as Barcelona faces challenges with other players also sidelined.
The club is set to host a La Liga match on October 8, 2023, followed by a Champions League fixture on October 11, 2023. Yamal’s return is eagerly anticipated, as his contributions have been vital to the team’s early season success. Alongside Yamal, several other key players are currently unavailable, including Ferran Torres, Jules Koundé, and Pedri, who all missed the recent match against Oviedo.
As the situation unfolds, both De la Fuente and Flick may need to navigate the complexities of player management and communication between national and club responsibilities, ensuring the best outcomes for emerging talents like Yamal.
