Buducnost Faces Crisis as Championship Title Hopes Dwindle
Buducnost, the reigning champion and most successful football club in Montenegro, is grappling with a significant crisis following a string of disappointing performances. The club, currently sitting seventh in the league table, has suffered three consecutive losses and accumulated only 25 points from 21 matches, raising alarms among fans and stakeholders alike. The situation is dire enough that the club’s management has already seen multiple coaching changes this season.
In an attempt to stabilize the team, Buducnost appointed Dejan Vukicevic as head coach during the autumn, tasked with correcting the course set by his predecessor, Ivan Brnovic. Vukicevic’s arrival was anticipated to be a turning point, similar to the positive outcomes experienced by other clubs like Sutjeska, Mornar, and Bokelj after their respective coaching changes. Unfortunately, the expected turnaround has not materialized. Instead, Buducnost’s performances have deteriorated further under his leadership.
Fans and analysts are questioning the effectiveness of Vukicevic’s strategies. While he has attempted to implement changes, many feel that the results have been unsatisfactory. The team has now recorded seven defeats, with a goal difference of just 21:17, highlighting the lack of offensive prowess and defensive stability.
Vukicevic’s strategy has included significant roster changes, removing several veteran players and foreign talent. For instance, he has sidelined five key players who were instrumental in the club’s past successes. The absence of suspended players like Lazar Mijovic and Lazar Savovic, who opted not to renew their contracts, has further depleted the squad. Critics argue that the current team’s composition lacks the depth and quality needed to compete effectively in the league.
The decision to prioritize young talent has also drawn scrutiny. While integrating youth players is vital for the club’s long-term strategy, the method of implementation has raised concerns. The starting lineup has featured older players, such as Mijatovic (38 years), Raspopovic (31), and others in their 30s, which contradicts the push for youth development. This has led many to question whether Vukicevic’s approach is sustainable or effective.
As the season progresses, the pressure mounts on Vukicevic to not only salvage the current campaign but also to prepare for the winter transfer window. He has publicly stated the need for five top-quality reinforcements to improve the squad. However, the club’s management has indicated financial constraints, which complicate the possibility of new signings. It is estimated that terminating contracts with underperforming players could cost around 800,000 EUR, raising further questions about the club’s financial health.
If the team does not secure a victory against Decic in the upcoming match, the prospects of claiming another league title or even the cup will be severely diminished. The current administration has been criticized for viewing the situation through a political lens rather than focusing on the sporting aspect, resulting in a lack of coherent strategy and direction.
The challenges faced by Buducnost this season represent one of the most challenging periods in the club’s history since Montenegro’s independence. With mounting frustrations from supporters and stakeholders, the path ahead will require decisive action and clarity from both the coaching staff and club management. The future of Buducnost hangs in the balance as they strive to restore their former glory in Montenegrin football.
