Barcelona commenced their LaLiga title defense with a decisive 3-0 victory against Mallorca on September 23, 2023. Despite the scoreline, coach Hansi Flick expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance, noting their lack of intensity after gaining a significant advantage.

The match took a dramatic turn in the first half when Mallorca’s players, Morlanes and Muriqi, were both sent off within six minutes, leaving the visitors to compete with just nine players for the remainder of the game. As a result, Barcelona capitalized on their numerical advantage but struggled to maintain control, leading to Flick’s critical assessment.

Barcelona opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a header from Raphinha, who connected with Yamal’s cross. Controversy arose shortly after when Mallorca’s defense faltered. Although their defender went down due to a head injury, the referee did not halt play, allowing Torres to score Barcelona’s second goal in the 23rd minute.

Flick remarked on the incident, stating, “I tell the team we have to play until the referee stops the match. It’s the referee’s decision, and we have to accept it.” He acknowledged that if the roles were reversed, he would not have been pleased.

After going two goals up and facing a depleted Mallorca side, Flick was concerned with his team’s performance level. “I didn’t like the match,” he said to reporters. “It’s three important points, but I didn’t like it. After going 2-0 up and [Mallorca] getting two red cards, I think the team played at 50 percent.”

The coach emphasized the need for improvement, saying, “Playing at 50 or 60 percent against nine players is not possible. We have to play faster. We have to improve in certain areas.” He indicated that he would address these concerns with the team to ensure they maintain focus and intensity throughout the match.

The second half saw little change in the dynamic, with Barcelona controlling possession but failing to capitalize on their advantage until the 94th minute. Yamal capped off the match with a stunning left-footed strike from outside the box, marking his first goal of the season and highlighting his promising talent.

Flick acknowledged Yamal’s exceptional performance, noting, “The important thing is that he plays at this high level. He’s special and everyone is watching him. What I see is that he’s very motivated. He’s always ready to push forward. Everyone can see that he’s exceptional.”

As Barcelona continues their campaign, Flick’s focus will likely remain on sharpening the squad’s effectiveness and ensuring they maintain a high level of performance, especially when faced with a numerical advantage. The team’s ability to convert opportunities will be crucial as they seek to retain their LaLiga title.
