Audi and Cadillac Face Challenges After Barcelona F1 Shakedown
The journey for Audi F1 and Cadillac in the 2026 Formula 1 season is proving to be both ambitious and challenging. As newcomers to the sport, both teams participated in a crucial shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where they faced significant hurdles while also achieving notable milestones.
Both teams have made substantial progress to reach this point. Cadillac shared footage of driver Valtteri Bottas fitting into the cockpit of their new car just a day after the final race of the previous season in Abu Dhabi. In contrast, Williams, a veteran team, recently posted an update featuring Carlos Sainz completing his seat fit. The comparison highlights the different trajectories of established teams versus newcomers.
Despite these achievements, the Barcelona shakedown underscored the challenges that lie ahead. Cadillac completed only 164 laps over three days, the fewest of all teams present, while Audi managed a total of 239 laps, with a strong final day that saw them achieve 144 laps. Audi’s initial testing days were marred by reliability issues, including a technical problem that prevented driver Gabriel Bortoleto from completing his run on Day 1.
Early Tests Reveal Long Road Ahead
The completion of these laps, while a positive sign, does not mask the reality that both teams have considerable work to do before the second test in Bahrain, scheduled for February 11-13, 2026. Mattia Binotto, head of the Audi F1 project, acknowledged the extensive effort required to address the technical and operational issues identified during the shakedown. In a candid statement, he shared, “It’s a lot of work for the entire team… We’ve got a very long list – a very, very long list.”
Despite these challenges, there is a sense of determination within the teams. Nico Hulkenberg, an Audi driver, expressed optimism via social media, indicating that the team is beginning to “know the direction” to take for the upcoming season. Binotto also noted that the commitment from the team is evident and that every detail must be managed effectively to improve their performance.
Cadillac is not only working on technical adjustments but is also preparing for a second filming day to gather promotional material and showcase their full livery. This filming day, scheduled for tomorrow, is significant as it allows the team to present its updated branding ahead of the Bahrain test.
Competitive Landscape Continues to Shift
With the top teams like Mercedes completing around 500 laps in Barcelona, the gap in performance is stark. Cadillac’s completion of just 164 laps leaves them trailing behind both Audi and established competitors. This performance gap is a critical area of focus as both teams prepare for the competitive landscape of the upcoming season.
The challenges faced in Barcelona serve as a reminder that while the initial stages of preparation have been completed, both Audi and Cadillac are only beginning their journey in Formula 1. The commitment to improvement and learning from these early tests will be crucial as they navigate the complexities of this high-stakes sport.
As the teams look ahead to Bahrain, the emphasis will be on addressing the issues experienced in Barcelona. The road to success in F1 is long and demanding, but both Audi and Cadillac appear ready to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.
