Aberystwyth Town Secures Victory as Jonny Evans Shines with Two Goals

Aberystwyth Town returned to winning form with a convincing 2-0 victory against Cwmbran Celtic, highlighted by an impressive performance from Jonny Evans, who scored both goals. Evans marked his return to the club with a superb brace, netting the opener in the 20th minute and sealing the win in injury time. Despite a setback with Ben Davies receiving a red card shortly after, Aberystwyth secured an important three points in front of their home crowd.
The match took place in Aberystwyth under sunny yet windy conditions, following a showery morning. Before kick-off, a minute’s silence was held in memory of the late Alan Blair, reflecting the community’s respect and remembrance.
Aberystwyth started the game with high energy, creating early chances. New signing Rakheem Reid missed a header after a promising move down the right flank. Cwmbran responded with attempts from Iestyn Davies and Gabriel Howells, both of which failed to hit the target. The breakthrough came when returning captain Desean Martin displayed his leadership by winning a crucial midfield battle. He delivered an accurate pass that allowed Evans to score with a skillful finish from the edge of the box.
As the first half progressed, Aberystwyth maintained their momentum, with Reid and Martin both contributing to several scoring opportunities. Although Cwmbran’s Jac Evans came close with a shot that went wide, Aberystwyth deserved their lead as they went into halftime.
After the interval, Aberystwyth continued to press. Reid nearly extended the lead after a clever pass from Calvin Smith, but his shot grazed past the post. Cwmbran’s Howells was also a threat, breaking through the defense but failing to convert a golden opportunity. The home side’s attacking efforts were relentless, with Hartley sending in a dangerous cross that narrowly missed Evans.
As the match neared its conclusion, substitute Gwydion Dafis showcased his skills with an impressive solo run, drawing a save from Cwmbran’s goalkeeper, Lewis Watkins. The ball fell to Evans, who calmly finished from 10 yards to secure the win for Aberystwyth.
The match took a turn when Davies was sent off in the 92nd minute for a push, but the result was already decided, allowing the home crowd to celebrate a significant victory. This win is a critical boost for manager Callum McKenzie and his team as they aim to build momentum in the JD Cymru South league.
Following a bye in the JD Welsh Cup, Aberystwyth Town will next be in action on September 27, 2023, facing Afan Lido away at 14:30. The match presents a great opportunity for fans to support their team as they continue their campaign in the league.
In other results from the JD Cymru South, Trefelin triumphed over Ammanford with a score of 2-0, while Pontypridd United fell to Newport City 1-3.
