Aberystwyth Town Faces Baglan Dragons in League Cup Debut
Aberystwyth Town will make their debut in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup this Saturday, hosting the Baglan Dragons at the Aberystwyth University Park Avenue Stadium. This first-round match marks the second time this month that the Dragons will visit Aberystwyth, following a league game earlier.
The Welsh Blood Service League Cup is a new competition for the 2025/26 season, designed as a Tier 2 tournament. It has undergone a reformatting to enhance the competitive structure. The initial three rounds will feature regionalised match-ups, eventually leading to an open draw when only four clubs remain. This format allows for potential North versus South clashes in the later stages. The final four teams will compete in traditional semi-finals, replacing the previous “Regional Finals” format, with the winners proceeding to a final held at a neutral venue.
Earlier this month, Aberystwyth Town secured their first home victory of the season by defeating the Dragons 2–1 in league play. The goals came from impressive left-footed strikes by Zac Hartley in the 22nd minute and Star Mayemba shortly after halftime, at 47 minutes.
In preparation for the cup, the Dragons’ manager, Carl Clements, has bolstered his squad over the summer with several key signings. Notable additions include former Swansea City U21 defender Osian Williams, Callum Jones from Ammanford, Cody Noonan from Trefelin, and Danny Devey from Pontardulais. These changes aim to enhance their performance as they compete in the new tournament format.
Match tickets for Saturday’s game are priced at £7 for adults and £5 for concessions. Additionally, primary school-age children and junior league players can enter for free. A £2 discount is available for adults purchasing digital tickets in advance.
With the excitement surrounding their cup debut, Aberystwyth Town is poised to make a strong impression in this new competitive landscape. Fans can look forward to a thrilling encounter as both teams vie for advancement in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup.
