WhatsApp Users Warned: Follow 3 Rules to Avoid Account Lockouts

WhatsApp users across Europe are facing a rising threat from cybercriminals as a new scam targets the popular messaging platform. To protect themselves and their contacts, users are advised to adhere to three essential guidelines. With billions of active users globally, WhatsApp remains an appealing target for hackers, who exploit the platform’s vast user base to deceive unsuspecting victims into divulging personal information.
Details of the Scam
The latest scam involves a message that seems to originate from a known contact, increasing the likelihood that users will fall for the deception. The message typically reads: “Hi! Please vote for Adeline in this contest; she’s the daughter of a close friend. The main prize is a scholarship abroad. Thank you so much!” This tactic effectively lures individuals into a false sense of security.
According to the cybersecurity firm Bitdefender, the scam is particularly insidious. When users click on the provided link, they are redirected to a counterfeit website that prompts them to vote. Subsequently, a message appears requesting the user’s phone number and a verification code sent to their device. Those who comply unwittingly grant hackers access to their WhatsApp accounts, enabling the scammers to lock them out and manipulate their contacts for further financial fraud.
“This gives attackers instant access to their accounts, which they then use to propagate the scam and defraud new victims of money,” Bitdefender stated.
Scope and Impact of the Threat
Over the past two months, this scam has targeted thousands, with hackers employing 177 fraudulent domains and 554 unique URLs. The majority of attacks have been reported in countries such as Germany, Poland, and Romania, but experts warn that similar incidents could soon emerge in the UK.
Bitdefender has been closely monitoring this expanding campaign, which exploits WhatsApp users through fraudulent “voting contests” designed to hijack accounts. This “Vote for My Child” scam not only compromises individual accounts but also turns friends and family into unwitting amplifiers of the fraud.
To safeguard against these types of scams, Bitdefender has issued several recommendations for WhatsApp users:
- Never share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone, including friends and family.
- Verify requests for money or favors through a direct phone call.
- Report suspicious messages within WhatsApp by selecting “More → Report.”
If you do become a victim of this scam, it is crucial to regain control of your account by requesting a new verification code. Additionally, inform your contacts about the compromise and notify your bank if any funds have been transferred.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, remaining vigilant and educated about potential scams is essential for all WhatsApp users. By following these guidelines, individuals can help protect themselves and their loved ones from falling victim to fraud.
