Research Poster Leads to €20,000 Funding for Ugandan Schools
A research poster unexpectedly opened the door to significant funding for educational initiatives in rural Uganda. Kevin McGuigan, a researcher focused on solar energy solutions, experienced this serendipitous turn of events after displaying his work outside his office at the university.
McGuigan had long wished for a notice board to showcase his research on using solar energy to purify contaminated drinking water in disadvantaged communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. After numerous unsuccessful requests for funding to create such a board, he took matters into his own hands. He used drawing pins to attach his posters to a wall near his office, despite knowing this was not officially sanctioned.
The impact of his initiative became evident when a head porter, during an official tour, began discussing McGuigan’s work with visitors. One individual, who was not part of the tour, lingered to express interest in the research. This chance encounter eventually led to a series of emails that would change the trajectory of McGuigan’s project.
Days later, while clearing his inbox, McGuigan found an email from an Asian philanthropist offering €20,000 to support his research. Initially skeptical, he dismissed the email as a scam. However, a phone call from the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor quickly clarified the situation. The man he had spoken to was indeed a wealthy benefactor interested in funding research projects.
Following this revelation, McGuigan re-engaged with the philanthropist and successfully secured the €20,000. The funds were allocated to install 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting tanks in primary schools across rural Uganda, significantly improving access to clean water for students.
Approximately six months later, McGuigan presented a comprehensive report to the benefactor. This included photos of the installed tanks and the delighted reactions of the schoolchildren. Inspired by this success, he decided to propose additional funding opportunities. His initial modest request evolved into a comprehensive wish list that included more tanks, travel bursaries, and stipends for students.
The total request reached several hundred thousand euros, but McGuigan emphasized that he would be grateful for any support. His approach proved fruitful; shortly after, the benefactor contributed a six-figure sum to McGuigan’s university research account, allowing for further expansion of his initiatives.
Reflecting on this experience, McGuigan noted the irony that a single poster, coupled with a brief conversation and a handful of emails, resulted in substantial funding that would have typically required months of arduous grant applications.
This story highlights the often-overlooked potential of research posters in academic settings. McGuigan’s experience serves as a reminder of the importance of visibility and communication in research. A well-placed and impactful poster can resonate with unexpected audiences, leading to opportunities that may not have been anticipated.
In a world where funding for research is increasingly competitive, McGuigan’s journey exemplifies how creativity and initiative can yield significant rewards, particularly in addressing pressing global challenges such as access to clean water in resource-poor environments.
