Children from three primary schools in Ceredigion will showcase their culinary skills in a live cook-off on October 9, 2023. The event will determine the winner of the coveted Junior Chefs of the Year title. Year 5 students from Ysgol Dyffryn Cledlyn in Llanybydder, Ysgol Gymunedol Y Dderi in Llangybi, and Ysgol Gymunedol Gatholig Padarn Sant in Aberystwyth will compete by preparing three-course meals with guidance from expert mentors.

The competition emphasizes not only cooking skills but also important aspects such as creativity, nutritional value, sustainability, and the use of seasonal ingredients. Points will be awarded based on these criteria, along with the children’s proficiency in preparing the dishes themselves.

A panel of judges, including former Michelin-star chef Douglas Balish, food consultant Hazel Thomas, and director of Naturesbase Education Gyles Morris, will evaluate the meals. Each judge brings a wealth of experience in the culinary field, ensuring that the competition maintains high standards.

Beyond the thrill of competition, the winning team will receive a unique prize. They will enjoy a full-day immersive outdoor cooking and foraging experience at Naturesbase in Cilcennin, which promises to be both educational and enjoyable.

This annual event not only fosters culinary talent among young students but also promotes healthy eating habits and environmental awareness. As the teams prepare for the cook-off, they embody the spirit of creativity and teamwork, making this a highly anticipated event in the Ceredigion community.

With the date approaching, excitement builds among participants, their families, and local supporters eager to witness the next generation of chefs in action.
