Moray Launches £4.8 Million STEM Centre to Inspire Young Minds
A new facility aimed at inspiring future scientists and engineers has officially opened in Moray, Scotland. The £4.8 million STEM Starts Discovery Centre, located next to Elgin Library, is the first of three planned centres in the region designed to provide children aged three to eight with hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The centre features a range of interactive displays and exhibits that encourage “active tinkering.” Among the attractions are an animation screen where children can create their own short films, a wind machine, and a rocket ship complete with astronaut costumes. The opening ceremony, held on March 15, 2024, welcomed excited youngsters from two local nurseries, Seafield and Curious Minds.
Richard Lochhead, the Scottish Government’s Minister for Business and Employment, officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He emphasized the importance of fostering children’s curiosity in STEM fields from an early age, stating, “By sparking children’s curiosity in science, technology, engineering and maths from an early age, we’re helping to give young people in Moray the tools to thrive. This is about investing in Moray’s future and ensuring local communities benefit from the jobs and opportunities that growth will bring.”
A Commitment to Long-Term Development
The development of the STEM Starts Discovery Centre is part of a broader initiative that includes the establishment of additional centres and a mobile van to bring STEM education directly to schools. Kathleen Robertson, leader of Moray Council, echoed Lochhead’s vision, highlighting the long-term benefits of engaging children in STEM learning: “By engaging children with STEM learning from an early age, we are laying strong foundations for future skills, confidence and opportunity.”
The project is receiving funding from the Scottish Government, contributing £3.5 million, alongside £1.3 million from Moray Council. It is one of eight initiatives under the Moray Growth Deal, which aims to stimulate economic development in the region.
Marc Macrae, chair of the council’s economic development committee, pointed out that this project will help cultivate a talent pipeline vital for the local economy, particularly in high-growth sectors such as technology, engineering, and renewable energy. He remarked, “This project is going to help build the talent pipeline that our local economy needs.”
As Moray moves forward with its commitment to developing future generations, the STEM Starts Discovery Centre stands as a significant step towards equipping young people with the skills necessary for an increasingly technological world.
