Aberystwyth Institute Joins Elite UK Research Alliance
The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University has been recognized as a founding member of the new National Research Organisations Group, which comprises 35 leading research agencies and institutes across the United Kingdom. As the only Welsh member, IBERS aims to contribute significantly to scientific advancements that benefit communities, economies, and national priorities.
The establishment of the National Research Organisations Group underscores a commitment to fostering collaboration among government, academia, and industry. This alliance is positioned to provide an authoritative perspective on science, policy, and investment in research. The group will play a crucial role in guiding decisions that address national priorities, including economic growth, security, and environmental sustainability, while also advancing efforts toward achieving net zero emissions.
IBERS’ Role in National Food Security
Professor Iain Donnison, Head of IBERS, expressed enthusiasm about the group’s launch, stating, “We warmly welcome the launch of the National Research Organisations Group and are delighted that IBERS is one of the founding members.” He emphasized the institute’s national capability in grassland and plant breeding science, highlighting its potential to support food security in the UK.
IBERS is strategically funded by the UKRI Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aligning its research efforts with national objectives. Professor Donnison noted that the institute’s contributions are critical for accelerating scientific discovery, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable economic growth.
Government Support for Research and Development
In support of this initiative, Lord Vallance, the UK Government Science Minister, remarked, “Research and Development is essential to building a better Britain.” He underscored how advancements in areas such as cancer treatments, clean energy, and future technologies are pivotal for strengthening the economy and society.
Lord Vallance further stated that the formation of the National Research Organisations Group represents an opportune moment for UK research institutes. By aligning their capabilities, the group aims to maximize the impact of scientific and technological advancements, ensuring that the benefits of research are widely shared.
The establishment of this group marks a significant step forward for the UK’s research landscape, with IBERS poised to play a vital role in this collaborative effort. As the country navigates complex challenges and opportunities ahead, the focus on science and innovation will be crucial in shaping a resilient and prosperous future.
