Welsh Government Launches £400,000 Grant to Boost Candidate Diversity
The Welsh Government is launching a new initiative aimed at enhancing diversity in political representation. The Candidate Diversity Grant scheme, which will provide £400,000 over two years, is designed to support individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in standing for elected office during devolved elections. This program is set to commence this autumn and marks a pivotal effort to create a more inclusive democracy in Wales.
The grant is part of a broader strategy to ensure that elected bodies reflect the diverse population they serve. By promoting increased representation, the initiative seeks to incorporate a wider range of perspectives and experiences into decision-making processes. This is expected to enhance public confidence and trust in democratic institutions across Wales.
£400,000 will be allocated to organisations that provide practical assistance to potential candidates. This support may include mentoring, training, and coaching, as well as financial aid for equipment and administrative tasks. The scheme specifically targets the upcoming 2026 Senedd election and the 2027 local government elections, aiming to improve diversity at both local and national levels.
Supporting Diverse Candidates
The launch of the Candidate Diversity Grant pilot is a direct response to the Elections and Elected Bodies (Wales) Act 2024, which mandates Welsh Ministers to promote diversity among candidates, focusing on protected characteristics and socio-economic backgrounds. The scheme will operate under the framework of the Democratic Engagement Grant, which has already been successful in funding projects aimed at engaging underrepresented groups in political processes.
Jayne Bryant, Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, expressed her commitment to creating a more inclusive public life. She stated, “We want Wales to be a country where everyone can participate in public life, have their voices heard and see themselves reflected in leadership positions.” Bryant emphasized the importance of identifying and dismantling barriers that hinder individuals, especially those with protected characteristics, from pursuing elected office.
The application process for qualifying organisations is straightforward. Interested parties can access the application form through the official Welsh Government website, facilitating a quick and efficient rollout of the grant.
By investing in this initiative, the Welsh Government aims to ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to stand for election and contribute to public service. The Candidate Diversity Grant represents a significant step towards fostering a democratic environment that is reflective of Wales’ diverse society.
