Welsh Ambulance Service Calls for Responsible 999 Use on NYE
The Welsh Ambulance Service is urging the public to exercise caution and use the emergency 999 service responsibly as New Year’s Eve approaches. This appeal comes as the Trust braces for what is expected to be its busiest night of the year.
Emergency Services Under Pressure
In preparation for the festivities, the Welsh Ambulance Service has issued essential guidelines to help individuals maintain their health and well-being during celebrations. According to Judith Bryce, the Trust’s Assistant Director of Operations, last year saw a surge in demand, with the service receiving 1,045 emergency 999 calls alongside 2,272 non-emergency calls to the NHS 111 service.
“New Year’s Eve is always an extremely busy time for us,” Bryce stated. “The health system is under considerable pressure, and we all have a role to play in protecting vital services for those who need them most.”
To ensure that emergency resources are available for those in real need, the Trust is reminding the public that the 999 service should only be used for emergencies. Individuals who require medical advice or reassurance should visit the NHS 111 Wales website as their first point of contact.
Respect for Emergency Workers
Additionally, the Welsh Ambulance Service emphasizes the importance of treating emergency workers with respect. Bryce highlighted the commitment of the staff who will be on duty throughout the night, stating, “While many people will be celebrating and enjoying themselves, our staff will be working tirelessly to keep people safe.”
She further urged the public to recognize that emergency workers are “ordinary people doing an extraordinary job” and called for kindness and respect towards ambulance crews. “Please do not subject them to any form of abuse,” Bryce added.
The Welsh Ambulance Service wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve and encourages the public to be responsible as they celebrate. By acting with consideration, individuals can help ensure that emergency services remain accessible for those who truly need assistance.
