Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has confirmed his commitment to lead the party in the upcoming elections in Scotland, Wales, and English councils scheduled for May 2026. This statement comes in response to recent speculation regarding future leadership ambitions within the party, particularly following remarks from Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester.

During an interview with BBC Scotland political editor Glenn Campbell, Starmer addressed concerns about his impact on the chances of Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar becoming first minister. He described Sarwar as an “excellent candidate,” emphasizing the importance of a Labour government at both the local and national levels. Starmer asserted, “It’s a choice between taking Scotland forward with Anas, a Labour first minister working with a Labour government in Westminster… or a third decade for this tired SNP government that has failed on so many fronts.”

Sarwar, while expressing support for Starmer, has been cautious in his appraisal of the Prime Minister’s performance. He acknowledged the challenges Starmer faces, stating, “He has got a really difficult job,” but noted that significant progress had been made over the past year. Sarwar criticized the government’s communication about its achievements, claiming, “very few people have been told about them or know about them.”

He highlighted improvements such as declining mortgage costs and rising wages, yet expressed concern that the average citizen remains unaware of these benefits. When pressed about his confidence in Starmer, Sarwar refrained from giving a direct endorsement, stating, “I think to be even talking in those terms is frankly ridiculous.” He reiterated the need for the Prime Minister to focus on delivering tangible benefits to the public.

As the elections approach, Sarwar has directed attention to the current First Minister, John Swinney, asserting that he must be removed from office. When asked if Starmer is the right person to lead during the election, Sarwar sidestepped the question, instead calling for a change in leadership at Bute House, the official residence of the First Minister in Scotland.

In a separate statement, Swinney appeared unfazed by the challenges facing the Labour Party, suggesting, “I’ll allow the Labour Party to fall apart as I lead the SNP to the success that we want to deliver.”

Adding to the political landscape, a new Ipsos poll released on the same day indicated that Starmer is currently the most unpopular leader in Scotland, with a net favourability rating of minus 47%. This rating positions him marginally below former US President Donald Trump in terms of public approval.

Starmer’s determination to lead Labour into the 2026 elections reflects his belief in the party’s potential for change and his commitment to addressing the challenges facing constituents across the UK. As the political climate evolves, both he and Sarwar will need to navigate a complex landscape as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
