Shetland Election: Choose Change with Hannah Mary Goodlad
The upcoming election in May 2024 presents Shetland voters with a choice between two contrasting candidates: Emma Macdonald, the current council leader with a controversial record, and Hannah Mary Goodlad, who brings 15 years of international business experience. Goodlad recently achieved a significant victory by convincing the Scottish Government to eliminate peak fares for Shetlanders, showcasing her determination and capability.
Goodlad’s recent success is indicative of her potential to bring about substantial change for the region. As a candidate, she has already demonstrated her ability to advocate for local interests effectively. Her supporters believe that if she can accomplish this while campaigning, her impact as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) could be even greater. This election is seen as a critical opportunity for Shetlanders to influence government decisions and secure a voice in the Scottish Government.
The stakes in this election are high, particularly for those disillusioned with the current leadership. Many voters are considering their options carefully, especially those who had previously thought of supporting the Scottish National Party (SNP) candidate, Alex Armitage. Some advocates have voiced concerns that a vote for Armitage may inadvertently aid Macdonald’s campaign, suggesting that her position could effectively remain unchallenged.
According to local resident Tommy Clark Scalloway, “A vote for the Green Party is a wasted vote.” He expressed frustration that supporting Armitage could lead to a continuation of Macdonald’s leadership rather than the desired change. The sentiment among some voters is that the Green Party lacks the support necessary to secure a victory in Shetland, making a vote for them less impactful.
As the election date approaches, the focus on Goodlad’s proactive approach to local issues is likely to resonate with voters seeking a new direction. Shetlanders are encouraged to reflect on what they want for their community and consider the implications of their choice. Goodlad’s campaign is characterized by her energy and commitment to addressing the needs of the constituency, and she aims to build on her recent achievements.
The election in May will not only determine the future leadership of Shetland but also set the tone for how the region engages with the wider Scottish Government. Voters are urged to consider the significance of their vote and the potential consequences of their choices as they head to the polls. With a strong candidate like Goodlad advocating for change, Shetlanders have the opportunity to shape their political landscape and ensure their concerns are represented.
