Russia Executes Large-Scale Missile Assault on Ukraine
Russia launched a significant missile and drone offensive against Ukraine on the morning of March 9, 2024. The strikes resulted in at least three fatalities and left dozens injured, as confirmed by Ukrainian officials. Attacks were reported across nine regions, including Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Kharkiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the primary targets of the Russian aggression were critical infrastructure, residential areas, and civilian enterprises. He highlighted that a missile armed with cluster munitions struck a multi-story building in Dnipro, causing significant damage. In his statement on Telegram, he remarked, “Each such strike is not a military necessity but a deliberate strategy by Russia to intimidate civilians and destroy our infrastructure.”
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, local governor Serhii Lysak reported that at least 26 individuals sustained injuries from the attack. The eastern city of Dnipro faced extensive damage, with several high-rise buildings and homes affected. Meanwhile, in the Kyiv region, authorities confirmed strikes in Bucha, Boryspil, and Obukhiv, resulting in damage to residential properties and vehicles.
Scale of the Attack and Response
The scale of the assault was noteworthy, with Ukraine’s Air Force reporting that Russia launched a total of 619 drones and missiles. Among these, 579 were drones, accompanied by eight ballistic missiles and 32 cruise missiles. Ukrainian defense forces were effective in countering the threat, successfully intercepting and neutralizing 552 drones, two ballistic missiles, and 29 cruise missiles.
The Air Force emphasized the role of tactical aviation in defending against the onslaught, stating, “During the air strike, tactical aviation, in particular F-16 fighters, effectively worked on the enemy’s cruise missiles. Western weapons once again prove their effectiveness on the battlefield.” This highlights the ongoing reliance on international military support by Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
In the western region of Lviv, regional governor Maxim Kozytsky reported that two cruise missiles were intercepted, showcasing the continued efforts of Ukrainian air defenses to protect the nation from aerial threats.
As the conflict continues to escalate, the impact on civilians remains a pressing concern. The ongoing attacks not only threaten lives but also exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The international community continues to monitor the situation, calling for a resolution to the conflict and increased support for those affected.
