River Cam Faces Urgent Crisis Over Sewage Pollution and Infrastructure

The River Cam is facing a significant crisis due to sewage pollution and failing infrastructure, according to Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats. During a visit to Cambridge on August 15, 2023, he emphasized the urgent need for investment and repairs to preserve this vital waterway.
Davey described the situation as “appalling,” highlighting the river’s status as a chalk stream, a rare ecological resource. “There are about 200 chalk streams in England, and we have 85 percent of the world’s chalk streams,” he noted. He added, “People have referred to chalk streams as England’s tropical rainforest, and the fact that they are being allowed to be polluted is quite outrageous.”
The Liberal Democrat leader’s visit coincided with increasing concerns regarding the River Cam’s maintenance. Earlier this year, the Conservators of the River Cam released an update indicating that the organization was in crisis due to the financial burden of necessary repairs. The group maintains the section of the river from Bottisham to the Mill Pond in Cambridge, and they stated that the costs exceeded their available funds.
Davey warned that failing to repair the river’s locks could lead to severe consequences, reducing the River Cam to a mere trickle. He called for collaboration among stakeholders, including the mayor, city council, and central government, to find a solution. “They have dragged their feet for too long,” he criticized, pointing to the Conservative government’s handling of the issue. “It would be a disaster if we cannot repair the locks.”
Councillor Cheney Payne, who is also the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Cambridge, expressed hope that Davey’s visit would raise awareness of the crisis. “The River Cam is iconic; it is an important piece of national, if not international, infrastructure,” she stated. She emphasized the need for urgent action to ensure the river remains clean and free from sewage discharge.
In response to the crisis, Cllr Payne launched a petition earlier this month, calling on the government to guarantee funding for repairs to the Jesus Green and Baits Bite locks. The petition quickly gained traction, amassing around 300 signatures within the first few days. “To properly repair and renew both locks would cost approximately £10 million,” she explained, stressing that such an amount would be unmanageable for the city council but feasible for the national government.
Davey also noted the significance of the government’s role in addressing the situation. He mentioned that the Labour government has been focusing on Cambridge as a hub for innovation and development, but he stressed that protecting the region’s water resources is essential for sustainable growth. “We are the driest region of the UK, so protecting our river is absolutely critical,” he said, urging Secretary of State for the Environment Steve Reed to pledge necessary funding.
As part of his visit, Davey participated in a punting trip along the River Cam, sharing that it was his first experience punting in Cambridge, although he had previously done so in Oxford. He described feeling slightly nervous but ultimately enjoyed the experience. “It attracts so much tourism, and it’s wonderful to see how much people enjoy it,” he said.
The urgent issues facing the River Cam highlight the pressing need for investment in environmental infrastructure. With public awareness growing, local leaders are working to ensure that the river receives the attention and funding it requires to avert a potential ecological catastrophe.
