Prince William Chooses Not to Strip Titles from Harry and Meghan
Prince William has reportedly decided not to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles, a move that reflects the diminished value of their brand rather than any familial kindness. The ongoing tensions between the brothers have made the idea of title revocation seem unnecessary, with insiders suggesting that the Sussexes’ self-inflicted setbacks have already resulted in reputational damage.
In the wake of the 2020 Sandringham agreement, which prohibited the use of HRH titles in private correspondence, Prince William has found himself increasingly frustrated by instances where Meghan has used the title. A notable incident occurred in April 2025 when she shared a letter from a Ukrainian official that addressed her as “Your Royal Highness.” While speculation arose that William might reconsider their titles upon becoming king, the escalating rivalry and the Sussexes’ commercial failures have altered perceptions about such a decision.
The couple’s philanthropic efforts have also shifted. As of December 2025, the Archewell Foundation has been restructured into Archewell Philanthropies, adopting a fiscal sponsor model. This change, announced on December 19, enables Harry, Meghan, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to broaden their philanthropic activities, even as it led to several administrative redundancies.
William’s apparent shift in strategy indicates that he prefers to let the Sussexes’ actions speak for themselves. Royal insider Rob Shuter noted on Maureen Callahan’s The Nerve podcast that William no longer feels the need to strip them of their titles, stating simply, “the title’s worthless.” According to Shuter, the Sussex brand has lost its appeal, and any potential for lucrative deals has diminished significantly.
The couple’s ventures in Hollywood have failed to deliver the expected returns. Their Netflix deal, which initially seemed promising, has faced criticism for yielding little substantial content. Following the release of the 2022 docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” Netflix terminated their five-year exclusive contract in August 2025. Similarly, their partnership with Spotify ended in 2023, with the podcast “Archetypes” struggling to find traction after just twelve episodes.
As Harry and Meghan sought financial independence after stepping back from royal duties in January 2020, their initial successes included securing approximately $1 million for a speech in Miami and signing with the elite Harry Walker Agency. Yet, the fallout from a series of high-profile controversies has made them less appealing in the entertainment industry. The couple’s attempts to leverage their royal status for commercial success have largely floundered, leading to a perception that their brand has become “toxic.”
Amid ongoing speculation about King Charles’s health and the future of the monarchy, there were rumors in October 2025 regarding William’s potential plans to revoke the titles of Archie and Lilibet through an executive order. Shuter’s analysis, however, suggests that the Sussexes do not pose a significant threat to the monarchy, making such actions unnecessary.
The ongoing saga between the brothers highlights the complexities of familial relationships under public scrutiny. Many observers empathize with the situation, recognizing that sibling disputes are common, and William’s restraint prevents him from appearing petty. This dynamic illustrates the resilience of the monarchy, even as Harry and Meghan navigate their self-imposed isolation in California.
As the year draws to a close, the question remains whether silence will mend the rift between the brothers or exacerbate it. One fact is clear: in the realm of public perception, the loss of relevance can be a far greater blow than any official decree. The Sussexes’ journey serves as a cautionary tale about the fleeting nature of fame and the challenges of maintaining a brand in the public eye, even for those once at the pinnacle of royal status.
