Nigeria Re-elected to IMO Council, Boosting Maritime Influence

President Bola Tinubu has announced Nigeria’s successful election to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the 2026–2027 biennium. This election, held during the IMO General Assembly in London on November 28, 2023, marks Nigeria’s return to the Council after a 14-year absence, underscoring the nation’s increasing maritime influence on the global stage.

In a statement released on Saturday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the election as a testament to the international community’s confidence in Nigeria’s commitment to maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship. He emphasized that the re-election into Category C reflects Nigeria’s constructive role in global shipping governance.

The President commended several key figures and institutions for their contributions to this achievement. He praised the efforts of Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, along with the staff of the Ministry and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). Their dedication, strategic engagement, and professionalism were crucial throughout the election process.

Expanding Nigeria’s Maritime Potential

Tinubu noted that the mandate from the new IMO Council aligns with his administration’s vision to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s blue economy.
