Green Party leader Zack Polanski openly embraced his identity as “woke” during a recent interview, expressing pride in being socially conscious while also sharing personal insights about his life. Polanski, who became the party’s leader in 2022, has seen the Greens gain momentum, attracting around 20,000 new members since his appointment. Current polling indicates the party leads among voters under 30, although it is competing closely with the Liberal Democrats for fourth place in the overall standings.

In an interview with 5 News, Polanski discussed the evolving meaning of “woke,” citing his admiration for New York’s new Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He articulated the term’s roots in social justice, stating, “I think we need to go back to the meaning of the word, which is awake to injustice.” He emphasized the importance of addressing inequality while demonstrating solidarity with minority communities.

Polanski also addressed personal criticism regarding his appearance, particularly his teeth. Responding to comments from high-profile figures, including television personality Jeremy Clarkson, he declared, “I really love my smile. I haven’t said this on-screen before, so here’s an exclusive. I have never lost a tooth.” He explained that he has a baby tooth waiting to be replaced by an adult tooth, which he intends to highlight as a natural characteristic rather than a cosmetic decision.

On political matters, Polanski expressed his views on Brexit, stating, “I think we should rejoin the European Union eventually. You can rarely find anyone anymore who thinks it has improved the country.” He also shared his indignation over Donald Trump‘s second state visit to the UK, criticizing the UK government’s approach to diplomatic relations with the former president. “Having a diplomatic relationship is very different to being subservient or obsequious,” he asserted, highlighting the need for a more principled stance in such matters.

While discussing his political journey, Polanski denied having taken acting lessons but acknowledged working with communications advisors to refine his public messaging. He remarked, “There’s nothing less authentic than someone going, ‘trust me, I’m being authentic.’” He believes the public can differentiate between genuine representation and self-serving interests.

Polanski also shared his enthusiasm for the BBC show The Traitors, expressing a deep admiration for host Claudia Winkleman. He described his obsession with the show as “probably unhealthily so,” indicating his plans to watch the season finale with great anticipation. Although he humorously noted that he would not participate in a celebrity version while serving as party leader, he acknowledged his competitive nature.

As the Green Party continues to gain traction, Polanski’s combination of personal authenticity and political ambition seems to resonate particularly well with younger voters. His embrace of “woke” principles and commitment to addressing pressing social issues reflect a larger trend within the party, aiming to broaden its appeal in an increasingly competitive political landscape.
