EU Urges Montenegro’s Institutions to Avoid Political Pressure
The European Union is closely monitoring the media landscape in Montenegro, urging public institutions to refrain from exerting political pressure. This response comes from Johan Satler, the EU Ambassador to Montenegro, following a letter from the editors of several Montenegrin media outlets. The editors expressed concern regarding what they termed false accusations linking the media to organized crime.
In his letter dated October 7, 2025, Ambassador Satler acknowledged the concerns raised by the editors of Televizija E, Portal ETV, M portal, Antena M, Portal Analitika, and Portal Standard. He emphasized the EU’s commitment to media freedom and the necessity of a secure environment for journalists, free from harassment, political pressure, censorship, or persecution.
The ambassador stated, “The EU consistently highlights that ensuring a safe and conducive environment for journalists is crucial for the rule of law and an essential element of Montenegro’s EU accession process.” He reiterated the importance of maintaining high standards in the fight against high-level corruption and organized crime, which are fundamental to the accession negotiations. Continuous improvement in this area is vital to combat the perception of impunity.
Satler also stressed the expectation that the judiciary will act within the legal framework and based on solid evidence in all criminal cases, ensuring legal certainty. “At the same time, all media have a responsibility to adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards,” he said.
The ambassador specifically highlighted the significance of respecting media freedom, judicial independence, and impartiality, in line with European and international standards. He urged public institutions to avoid any inappropriate political influence, including harsh public criticism and unfounded accusations against civil society representatives, media, and the judiciary.
The EU’s ongoing monitoring of this issue reflects its commitment to the principles of democracy and media integrity. Satler concluded by inviting further information from the editors regarding this critical matter, underscoring the EU’s proactive stance in safeguarding media rights and ensuring a fair judicial process in Montenegro.
