China Condemns US Threats to Interfere in Nigeria’s Affairs
China has issued a warning to the United States regarding its threats of military intervention in Nigeria following statements made by former President Donald Trump. Trump suggested that the US could take military action if the Nigerian government did not address the alleged persecution of Christians. At a press conference in Beijing on October 24, 2023, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, expressed China’s firm support for the Nigerian government.
Mao stated, “As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.” This response came after Trump warned that the US could “go into Nigeria guns-a-blazing” if the situation concerning Christians in the country did not improve.
China’s concerns extend beyond Nigeria. Reports have emerged indicating that Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela, is seeking military assistance from China, Russia, and Iran amid fears of potential US military action. Mao addressed these developments, emphasizing China’s position against the use of force in international relations.
“China has a clear-cut stance on the US cracking down on so-called ‘drug cartels’ by force in the Caribbean Sea,” she added. “We stand against moves that undermine peace and stability in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.” Mao reiterated the importance of international cooperation in addressing cross-border crimes rather than resorting to unilateral military actions.
Trump’s remarks on social media indicated a readiness for decisive military measures. He instructed the US Department of War to prepare for “possible action” in Nigeria, asserting that if the Nigerian government failed to act, the US would halt all aid and might engage militarily against what he described as Islamic terrorists responsible for violence against Christians. He stated, “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
In response to Trump’s comments, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu defended his government, stating that the characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect the reality of the nation. He emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding freedom of religion and noted that religious tolerance is a core aspect of the nation’s identity.
“The consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians contradict the narrative of religious persecution,” Tinubu said. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s opposition to any form of religious persecution, highlighting the government’s dedication to maintaining peace and stability within its borders.
As tensions rise between the US and Nigeria, China’s intervention highlights its increasing role in global diplomatic matters, particularly in regions where the US is traditionally influential. The ongoing situation reflects the complexities of international relations, particularly concerning issues of sovereignty and human rights.
