ADC Celebrates INEC Recognition and Criticizes APC’s Actions

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed appreciation for the recognition granted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to its leadership under Ralph Okey Nwosu. The party condemned the recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan while accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining opposition voices in Lagos State.

During a press conference in Abuja on March 13, 2024, Nwosu stated that INEC’s recognition concluded a prolonged leadership crisis within the ADC. He emphasized that the commission’s decision was consistent with the rule of law. This recognition followed the conclusion of a court-ordered tenure extension for the former national chairman, which expired in August 2023. This development facilitated a national convention that appointed new officers to the party.

Nwosu characterized INEC’s acknowledgment as a significant victory for democracy and internal party discipline. He reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to fostering robust democratic institutions across Nigeria.

In light of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, Nwosu condemned the actions of her Senate colleagues aimed at silencing her. He remarked, “Senator Natasha has distinguished herself as a courageous legislator, raising issues of national importance, including the welfare of her constituents. Any move to silence her amounts to a deliberate assault on democracy. Lawmakers are elected to speak for the people, not to be persecuted for standing with them.” He urged the Senate leadership to respect due process and to reverse what he termed an “unjust and politically motivated action.”

Nwosu also criticized the APC for allegedly taking steps to weaken opposition in Lagos State. He claimed that security agencies have been misused by the ruling party to disrupt opposition gatherings and community outreach efforts. “We are witnessing a dangerous trend where the space for opposition politics is being systematically shut down. Lagos is fast turning into a one-party state, and this is unacceptable in a democracy,” he stated.

The ADC chairman emphasized the party’s dedication to offering a credible alternative for Nigerians. He pledged to collaborate with like-minded parties, civil society organizations, and the media to safeguard democratic freedoms. “Our democracy can only grow if all voices are heard and respected. The ADC will continue to stand with the people, defend democratic values, and resist any attempt to silence opposition voices across the country,” Nwosu concluded.

The ADC’s statements reflect a broader concern about the health of democratic practices in Nigeria, particularly in the face of increasing political tensions and accusations of intimidation against opposition groups.
