Xi Jinping and Trump Discuss US-China Relations in Busan Meeting

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. President Donald Trump today in Busan, discussing the state of US-China relations and the economic landscape. Xi emphasized the importance of their leadership in maintaining a stable partnership, noting that both nations have become “partners and friends,” marking a significant achievement given their differing national circumstances.

During the meeting, Xi addressed the challenges facing both countries, stating, “As the two largest economies in the world, occasional misunderstandings are perfectly normal.” He likened their leadership roles to that of “helmsmen,” asserting the need for both leaders to steer their nations in a stable direction amidst global turbulence.

Looking at economic performance, Xi pointed out that China’s economy has sustained a positive trend, with a growth rate of 5.2 percent in the first three quarters of the year. The Chinese leader also mentioned recent trade discussions held in Kuala Lumpur, where the two countries reached a fundamental consensus on addressing current issues. Xi expressed that trade should serve as a cornerstone and driving force for US-China relations rather than a source of conflict.

Trump reciprocated Xi’s sentiments, expressing his honor in meeting with such a respected leader and longtime friend. He remarked, “The relationship between the United States and China has always been very good and will be even better in the future.” Trump reiterated that both nations could achieve significant accomplishments together, emphasizing China’s essential role as the largest partner of the United States.
